In ancient Egypt , barges played an important role in navigation on the Nile and had both cultic and cultural significance. In the early days , the royal barge was equipped with a simple directional post, which the king replaced with the post of the world ruler Re after the introduction of the cult of Re . For example, the 40 meter long ship King had Cheops a gold jacket and served as a big house of jurisprudence .

As part of the festivities of the escort of Horus , the king drove to several stops on the banks of the Nile with his royal barge. For this purpose, the king's barge represented the king himself as a symbol of God.

After the re-cult was introduced in the 5th dynasty , the sun god, according to the Egyptians' belief , drove a sun barge over the celestial arc during the day and crossed the waters of the underworld at night .

Deceased dignitaries were transported in solemn processions on barges across the river to their grave , and barge models were given for the dangerous journey through the underworld.
