Peter Gunn is an American crime series by Blake Edwards that first aired on NBC from 1958 to 1960 and then on ABC until 1961 . The protagonist of the series is private detective Peter Gunn. The series became internationally known through the title song of the same name by Henry Mancini , which was interpreted shortly after it was first broadcast by Duane Eddy . In Germany, from May 1997, 50 of the 114 episodes were post-colored on RTL . Directed by Blake Edwards, Boris Sagal , Robert Gist , Jack Arnold , Lamont Johnson and Robert Altman .
action
Peter Gunn is a private detective in a nameless city. He appears distinguished and well dressed, but can also get rough during his investigations. His favorite haunt is the Jazz - Bar "Mothers", which is operated by "Mother", an elderly landlady. Gunn's friend, singer Edie Hart, also works in the bar, who is also opening her own shop in the third season. At “Mother”, Gunn receives important information for his assignments through contacts to the underworld. From time to time his friend, the police lieutenant Jacoby, also gives the private detective orders.
Production history
Edwards developed the series from the radio play series Richard Diamond, Privatdetektiv (1949-1953), which he also created , and which he produced from 1957 to 1960 as a television series with David Janssen .
For cost reasons, Peter Gunn was still produced on black and white film mostly in the studio and at night, as daytime shooting outside of the film was too time-consuming. In order to make the figure of Peter Gunn visually unmistakable, Edwards invented the Peter Gunn haircut, a brush cut with parting.
In the first season, Hope Emerson played the role of the landlady Mother. After Emerson's death, Minerva Urecal took on the role for the second season.
The production of the series was stopped by Edwards in 1961 in order to be able to devote himself entirely to the film business.
criticism
“Long, unreal shadows, the nighttime atmosphere underlaid with jazz, made Gunn's Los Angeles a mythical place, the ultimate noir city of television [...]
There have been dozens of series that copied PETER GUNN's style, attitude, or concept. They all still have their tough fans to this day, but each of them admits that PETER GUNN is the original who started the cool , chic detectives of the 60s who operated in a world that is sometimes as bizarre as a BATMAN comic was by Bob Kane and played the second leading role in music and camera.
