Duane Eddy in 1938 in Corning in the US state New York born and began at the age of five years, as its big Western Hero Gene Autry guitar. In 1951 he moved to Arizona with his family .
In 1963, when he was 25, he married Mirriam Johnson, a country singer by the stage name Jessi Colter . In their marriage of only six years, they also worked together in the artistic field and in 1967 released the single Guitar on My Mind . After their divorce, Jessi Colter married country singer Waylon Jennings the following year , while Duane Eddy married his second wife, Deed, with whom he still lives in Memphis , Tennessee .
Work and successes
Duane Eddy has been known for his instrumental music on the electric guitar since the late 1950s , with which he was regularly featured in the US and European charts for several years . Eddy's trademark is his guitar sound, known as " twang " . His best known piece is a version of the piece Peter Gunn by the composer Henry Mancini , for which he received a Grammy Award in 1987 . Duane Eddy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Musicians Hall of Fame in 2008 . Duane Eddy's most famous instrumental titles include Peter Gunn (1959): Rebel Rouser (1958), Forty Miles of Bad Road (1959), A Londonderry Air (1961), Dance with the Guitar Man (1962) and Boss Guitar (1962) ). The 1960s were Eddy's most productive period with around twenty albums published; In 1965 alone six long-playing records appeared under his name. Duane Eddy was never able to achieve a No. 1 hit in the USA despite several gold records - the first of them in 1958; One of his pieces reached the highest chart position in 1960 with the title Because They're Young at number four. During the 1950s and 1960s, fifteen of Eddy's singles reached the top 40 on the US Billboard charts .
In the 1980s, Eddy recorded the song Peter Gunn in a modernized version with the British band Art of Noise , for which he received a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 1987 . In 2004 he received the Guitar Player Magazine Legend Award - an award that had only been presented once before.
Duane Eddy's latest release dates back to 2011. In total, Eddy's recordings have sold more than 100 million records worldwide - making him the most successful rock 'n' roll instrumentalist of all time.
Guitar sound as a trademark
Eddy created the typical Duane Eddy twang by playing the lead melody on the bass strings of his electric guitar and working with a combination of the tremolo , echo and reverb sound effects that gave his guitar playing a deep, earthy sound. Likewise, the guitar sound on Eddy's recordings was influenced by the choice of his instrument. At the beginning of his career, Eddy first played a Gibson Les Paul . He later switched to the Gretsch Chet Atkins model , but in 1962 he switched to a special model from Guild , the Duane Eddy DE-500, developed according to his specifications . The Gretsch and Guild models are guitars with a hollow body and with a Bigsby vibrato unit that is indispensable for Eddy's typical sound .
The Rolling Stone listed Eddy 64th of the 100 best guitarists of all time .
