Jessi Colter
Jessi Colter (born May 25, 1943 as Mirriam Johnson in Phoenix , Arizona ) is an American country singer .
Life
From 1963 to 1968 Colter was married to the guitarist Duane Eddy , with whom she also worked musically. Colter released her first record in 1969. That same year she married country star Waylon Jennings and with him became part of the outlaw movement . Their son Shooter Jennings was born in 1979.
Despite several records produced in the 1970s, Jessi Colter was always overshadowed by her far more famous husband. In 1975, Jessi Colter had her first and only No. 1 success on the Billboard Country Charts with the single I'm Not Lisa . The song she wrote herself and which was produced by Ken Mansfield and Waylon Jennings, reached the top of the country charts on May 24, 1975 and stayed at number 1 for a week. After that, her solo releases were only granted modest hit parade success. Her duet with Waylon Jennings on the title Storms Never Last was somewhat more successful . This release from the album Waylon & Jessi made it into the top ten of the country charts in 1980.
Back in 1978, she was also involved with Jennings at the artistically ambitious but commercially unsuccessful project "White Mansions" in which the songwriter and producer Paul Kennerley the American Civil War from the perspective of some Southern characters processed musically.
In 2017 Colter published her autobiography An Outlaw and a Lady: A Memoir of Music, Life with Waylon, and the Faith That Brought Me Home .
