Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance
The Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance (German: Grammy Award for the best performance of a rock instrumental ) is a music prize that has been awarded at the annual Grammy Awards since 1980 . From 1986 to 1989 the prize was Best Rock Instrumental Performance (Orchestra, Group or Soloist) . The prize has not been awarded since 2012 and was added to the categories Best Hard Rock / Metal Performance and Best Rock Performance .
The award went to musicians or music groups from the fields of rock music , hard rock and metal for pieces of music without singing ( instrumental music ).
Background and story
Since 1958, the Grammy Awards (actually Grammophone Awards) have been presented annually in numerous categories by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) in the United States of America to recognize artistic achievement, technical competence and excellent overall performance regardless of album Honor sales or chart position.
The Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance was first presented in 1980 at the 22nd Grammy Awards, the winner was Paul McCartney and his band Wings for Rockestra Theme . From 1986 to 1989 it was called Best Rock Instrumental Performance (Orchestra, Group or Soloist). According to the price description “ For newly recorded rock, hard rock and metal instrumental performances ” (German: “For newly recorded instrumental rock, hard rock and metal performances”) the award went to artists for newly recorded rock, hard rock and metal - Performances.
This award has not been awarded since the Grammy Awards in 2012, as it was added to the categories Best Hard Rock / Metal Performance and Best Rock Performance .

The prize was first awarded to Paul McCartney and the Wings in 1980 for the song Rockestra Theme from the album Back to the Egg . The record for most awards in this category is held by Jeff Beck , who has received the award six times as a solo artist. Sting received the award three times, including twice with his band The Police , and The Flaming Lips received the award twice. In different constellations Frank Zappa and Steve Vai (once for the Zappa album Jazz from Hell and once as Zappa's Universe Rock Group featuring Steve Vai), Stevie Ray Vaughan and his brother Jimmie Vaughan (each once together as Vaughan Brothers and once with others) won Musicians) as well as Carlos Santana (once as a solo musician and once with his band Santana together with Eric Clapton) and Eric Clapton (once together with Santana and once with Jimmie Vaughan and other musicians) twice each.
With a total of 14 nominations, the American musician Joe Satriani was nominated most frequently for the award, but he never received it and is therefore also the musician with the most nominations without a price. The Grammy Award went a total of 15 times to musicians from Great Britain and 14 times to musicians from the United States, and twice to Carlos Santana, who is from Mexico.
