Blues for Salvador is a studio album by Carlos Santana from 1987. It is one of the albums that were released under his name and not under the band name Santana . Carlos Santana dedicated the album to his wife at the time, Deborah.

The album

In February 1987 Santana had released the album Freedom . Except for the two keyboardists Tom Coster and Gregg Rolie , all the musicians in the band Santana were also involved in the solo album Blues for Salvador . The mostly instrumental pieces show different sides of Santana. The album features an homage to Charles Mingus , the Bailando / Aquatic Park , which emerged from a soundcheck in 1983 , an instrumental version of the piece Deeper, Dig Deeper from the album Freedom and an alternative version by Hannibal from the album Zebop! . On the tracks ' Trane and Now That You Know , recorded live in 1985 , Santana moves in hard rock realms and on the title track in the blues of his early years. He wrote the song Bella for his daughter and as an expression of admiration for the guitarists Wes Montgomery , Otis Rush , Buddy Guy , T-Bone Walker and John McLaughlin .

reception

Blues for Salvador won a Grammy in 1989 for Best Performance of a Rock Instrumental .

William Ruhlmann from allmusic highlights, among other impressive pieces, above all 'Trane with Tony Williams on drums. He gave the album four and a half stars out of five.

Matthew Greenwald wrote about the title track at allmusic that Carlos Santana is returning to his blues roots while maintaining his Latin style. Furthermore, it is a bow to Michael Bloomfield , a guitarist who strongly influenced Santana in his early years and on whose 1969 album The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper he played.
