Phish is an American rock band best known for their improvisations and jam sessions .

The music spans a wide range of genres including rock, fusion , bluegrass , folk , blues, and progressive rock . Although the group was barely heard on the radio or on music television , word of mouth developed a large fan base.

history

Phish was founded in Burlington in 1983 by Trey Anastasio , Jeff Holdsworth, and Jon Fishman, all of whom attended the University of Vermont . Shortly afterwards they were joined by Mike Gordon and in 1984 they began performing outside of university. Shortly after keyboardist Page McConnell joined Phish in 1985, Holdsworth left the band. In 1986 Anastasio and Fishman moved to Goddard College , where McConnell was already a student.

In early 1988 Phish recorded her debut album Junta , which she sold exclusively as a music cassette at her concerts. In 1989 Lawn Boy followed , which was released in 1990 on the indie label "Absolute A-Go-Go", a sub-label of Rough Trade . Phish toured America in 1991 but lost her record deal at the end of the year when Rough Trade filed for bankruptcy. Elektra signed the band, and in 1992 they followed on their new label A Picture of Nectar. The band continued to tour the country while Elektra re-released the first two Phi albums.

During her 1992 tour, Phish had Carlos Santana at at least one of her concerts (in Stowe, Vermont on July 25, 1992) . Santana jammed along with the songs You enjoy myself , Llama , Santana´s Jam # 1 , Santana´s Jam # 2 , David Bowie and Catapult that evening. This is evidenced by two CD releases from 1992 - one with the title A Phishy Story , whose recordings are from Providence and Stowe, and another CD entitled Jammin Santana , whose recordings are from Stowe on the same day. It is not known whether these CDs are bootlegs , as Phish did not have a record deal during this period.

In early 1993, Phish's fourth studio album called Rift was released . The next year Hoist followed , from which the single Down With Disease was decoupled. In late 1994, Crimes of the Mind was released, an album the band had already recorded in 1991 with The Dude of Life (also performed as middle exter on many of the Phish songs). Further releases in the 1990s included the double- live album A Live One , the studio LPs The Story of the Ghost and Billy Breathes (the latter in particular received excellent reviews), the live LP Slip, Stitch & Pass and finally the 6- Hampton Comes Alive CD box containing two full concerts. The album even reached gold status .

At the beginning of 2000 Phish was able to continue their success with the album Farmhouse and the accompanying single Heavy Things , but in October of the same year the musicians separated temporarily to devote themselves to other projects. From 2001 to 2003, Elektra released twenty of the band's live albums, and in December 2002 Phish began performing live again. They toured for another year and a half, released one last studio album in 2004 in the form of Undermind, and finally announced their final breakup.

In March 2009 the band got back together and played a few concerts in the USA during the summer . In September of the same year her 14th studio album "Joy" was finally released, which was followed by an extensive North American tour. Phish toured North America in the years that followed.

In July / August 2017 Phish played 13 concert under the title The Baker's Dozen in Madison Square Garden in New York . Each concert had an individual setlist ; no song was played twice.
