Trey Anastasio (born September 30, 1964 in Fort Worth , Texas ; born Ernest Joseph Anastasio III ) is an American guitarist .

He became known with the band Phish , in which he is also a singer and main composer. Anastasio was voted 73rd among the "100 Greatest Guitarists" by Rolling Stone magazine .

Career

Anastasio, whose name comes from the Greek word for resurrection , first started playing drums and switched to guitar as a teenager. His mother Dina, with whom he wrote songs as a child, was the author of Sesame Street Magazine. In high school, he began writing music with classmates. Some of these songs were later included in the Phish repertoire (e.g. Golgi Apparatus ).

In 1983 he went to the University of Vermont to study philosophy . Here he met Jon Fishman (* 1965), Mike Gordon (* 1965) and Jeff Holdsworth (* 1963), who founded Phish in 1983. Shortly after keyboardist Page McConnell (* 1963) became a member of Phish in 1985, Holdsworth left the band.

At the same time Anastasio started a long-term collaboration with the composer Ernie Stires (1925–2008), who also taught him composition and arrangement. Anastasio graduated with a degree in creative writing in 1988 .

In 2000, Anastasio formed the short-lived band Oysterhead with The Police drummer Stewart Copeland and Primus bassist Les Claypool . He also played with Michael Rays Cosmic Krewe .

Private

Anastasio married Susan Eliza Statesir in 1994. They have two daughters.
