Michael Ray

Michael Ray (born December 24, 1952 in Trenton (New Jersey) ) is an American jazz trumpeter who has also emerged in the funk genre.

Live and act

Ray first played with Patti LaBelle , The Delfonics and The Stylistics , before being accepted into Sun Ra’s Arkestra in 1978 . After his death he also belonged to the Sun Ra Arkestra , led by Marshall Allen . He toured with these formations and was involved in numerous albums. In the 1980s he was also part of Kool and the Gang , with whom he introduced hits like Celebration and Get Down on It . He's still touring with this band.

In addition, he has headed his funk band Michael Ray and the Cosmic Krewe from New Orleans since 1989 , which gave the listener the impression that “during the full moon, Sun Ra turned into Ornette Coleman and got into the second line of a carnival parade” Cosmic Krewe in New Orleans, he directed a second ensemble of the same name in the northeast of the USA. In addition to Marshall Allan, Marc Ribot , Jonathan Fishman and Trey Anastasio also belonged to the Cosmic Krewe. He also performed with Phish , with whom he recorded the albums A Live One (1995), Phish (1998) and Trey Anastasio's Surrender to the Air . He was also in the studio with Jimmy Cliff , La Toya Jackson , Delfeayo Marsalis and Stanton Moore . He has also performed with groups such as Iris May Tango , Aquarium Rescue Unit , Medeski, Martin & Wood , Widespread Panic and Porno for Pyros .

The interdisciplinary concept of a neon sound performance developed for his performances was awarded in 1993 ( National Endowment for the Arts , Rockefeller and Andy Warhol Foundations). The performance of his Cosmic Krewe at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival 1999 also received an award.
