Toshi Makihara

Toshi Makihara ( Japanese 牧 原 ト シ , Makihara Toshi ; born March 31, 1960 in Chiba Prefecture ) is a Japanese jazz and improvisation musician ( drums , percussion ) living in the USA .

Live and act

Makihara learned jazz and improvisation music during his high school days with Sabu Toyozumi, who shaped him, and later studied the Japanese butoh dance form, a. a. at Ōno Kazuo . He then performed with dance and music ensembles for several years, including a. with various choreographers in the Philadelphia area . He has been working in the American improvisation scene since the 1990s. a. with Marshall Allen , Jim Meneses , Thurston Moore , William Parker , Eric Ross , Wally Shoup and Blaise Siwula ., as well as with Eugene Chadbourne . In the field of jazz he was involved in twelve recording sessions between 1998 and 2008. He has since appeared in solo programs (mostly with a single drum), as well as with John Butcher .
