La Toya Yvonne Jackson (born May 29, 1956 in Gary , Indiana ) is an American pop singer . She is a member of the musically successful Jackson family and the sister of Michael and Janet Jackson .

Life

La Toya is the fifth of nine children in the Jackson family. Her parents are Joseph (1928–2018) and Katherine Jackson (* 1930). La Toya was the first Jackson sister to start a solo career. She wrote her first single Night Time Lover with her brother Michael. The accompanying album La Toya Jackson , which was released in 1980, worked among others. a. Stevie Wonder and Ray Parker Jr. with. Except for their early work, however, their albums were judged rather negatively by critics. It was not very successful commercially. In 1980 she had a minor success in the German single charts with If You Feel the Funk . In the USA she made it to a middle position in the American pop charts with the single Heart Don't Lie in 1984 . The best-selling board on which their voice is heard, but Thriller by Michael Jackson . Here she sang in the background on PYT (Pretty Young Thing) ; the record sold a total of around 100 million times and is still the most successful album worldwide.

La Toya Jackson is not only a singer but also a composer. She mostly wrote half of her own tracks herself. She also wrote Reggae Night for the 1983 album The Power and the Glory by reggae musician Jimmy Cliff . The title became a huge success worldwide. She later wrote two more tracks for Cliff's album Cliff Hanger , which won a Grammy Award in February 1986 .

Jackson's career in the 1980s was heavily guided and controlled from Europe (especially Germany). In 1987 she signed a record deal with the Hamburg company Teldec (now East / West Records ), which coordinated her 1988 album La Toya . For this album, Jackson also worked with British hit producer trio Stock Aitken Waterman . Tony Monn even recorded her follow-up album Bad Girl in Munich. Four compositions also came from the German songwriting duo Klarmann / Weber .

Her musical career has been accompanied by headlines again and again. She was portrayed naked in Playboy , wrote a shocking autobiography, Growing Up in the Jackson Family , in which she accused her father of incest , went shopping with a boa constrictor around her neck, and announced that all suspicions were against her brother Michael Jackson correspond to the truth. At least she did so in 1993, but later said she was under the influence of her manager at the time. In the renewed allegations against her brother in 2004, she backed him. In the meantime, she has made up with her family. According to her, the image of the family's black sheep was an invention of her ex-husband and manager Jack Gordon , who died in 2005 .

After her Playboy photos, La Toya performed at the Moulin Rouge in Paris for half a year and gave the well-known theater two sold-out performances six days a week and standing applause after each performance. The multi-million dollar fee was the Moulin Rouge's most expensive engagement in its more than 100-year history. However, Jackson left the Moulin Rouge six months before the contract expired and was later sued by the theater.

La Toya has also got involved in social matters; together with the former First Lady Nancy Reagan she appeared in 1987 in the anti-drug program Just Say NO .

A successful petition from their fans, the self-proclaimed Toy Soldiers of the "Church of La Toya", prompted the Cherry Pop label to re-release their debut album on May 22, 2006. It was the first time her debut was released in the UK.

For 2009 the release of their eighth album Startin 'Over was announced, which was postponed again and again from mid-2002. La Toya Jackson released two singles from the album in 2004, which were only sent to radio stations and clubs for promotional purposes: Just Wanna Dance climbed to number 13 on the American Billboard Dance Charts; Free the World , based on Michael Jackson's Heal the World , made it to number 24. On July 28, La Toya released the single Home , which she dedicated to her brother Michael Jackson , who died on June 25, 2009 . After the death of her brother, the album was postponed indefinitely.

On June 4, 2014, La Toya Jackson announced on the television show Good Morning America that she was engaged to her longtime manager.

In February 2019, Jackson reached fifth of a total of twelve places as Alien in the first season of the US version of The Masked Singer .
