PYT (Pretty Young Thing) was first released in the US on September 19, 1983, and was released in Europe on February 15, 1984. Another demo was recorded before the release, but with an up-beat tempo and after a long discussion the other version was released. The backing vocals are from La Toya Jackson , Janet Jackson , Howard Hewett, Becky Lopez, Bunny Hull and James Ingram. The synthesizer was played by Greg Phillinganes . The reviews were moderate: Rolling Stone described the song as a "courageous number". Jon Pareles wrote in The New York Times that the song is not necessarily more successful than the other hits from Thriller.
