(1997)

The double album HIStory - Past, Present and Future Book I ( English for: " History / His story - past, present and future Book 1 ") by the American pop singer Michael Jackson is on the one hand a greatest hits compilation, on the other hand the artist's ninth studio album. It was released on June 14, 1995 by Sony Music . It was produced by Michael Jackson, James Harris III, Terry Lewis and R. Kelly, among others. It has been sold over 18 million times internationally. The album holds u. a. the record for the best-selling double album; in addition, the advertising campaign was the most expensive advertising campaign for an album at forty million US dollars.

review

The sales figures in the United States were below expectations. All songs have been remastered. For the most part of the songs newly released at the time (1995) Jackson dealt with the scandal of 1993. For the first time he also uses swear words such as "fuck" in the song Scream or "shit" in the song This Time Around .

The title They Don't Care About Us can only be found in a censored version on the currently available edition of the album. The controversial lines “jew me” and “kike me” (jew = Jude , kike = Itzig , derogatory for Jude; analogously doing it the Jewish way) are drowned out by noises. The uncensored version can only be heard on the first edition, which is no longer available in regular stores, on which the audio message to the German fans can also be found. Another version of the title can be found on Jackson's King of Pop album . There the song can be found abridged; the lines criticized have been cut out.

Stranger in Moscow is an autobiographical song. Jackson confirmed several times that he had written the title back in 1993 when the Dangerous World Tour stopped in Moscow.

The songs Earth Song and Little Susie were already in the production of the album Dangerous , but did not appear on this. A revised version was published on HIStory .

Jackson originally planned to write lyrics for the chorus of Earth Song , but then failed to do so. Earth Song was originally called What About Us . An earlier version with the same title, which differs slightly from the officially published version, has been circulating as a black copy on the Internet since around 2003 .

DS stands for Dom Sheldon, with Michael Jackson clearly audible singing " Tom Sneddon " and not Dom Sheldon. The song is a settlement with the prosecutor who led both 1993 and the second trial against Jackson from 2003 to 2005.

The song Come Together was first heard at the end of the film Moonwalker (1988). It was released in early 1992 as a bonus track on the single Remember the Time in a slightly different and longer version compared to Moonwalker . The version published on HIStory is just an "edit" of the 1992 version.

You Are Not Alone is the only love song on HIStory and became one of the album's greatest hits. The author of the song - R. Kelly - was accused of plagiarism in this regard several times, including in court .

When it was released, the album was panned by the US media in particular. Among other things, Jackson was accused of having nothing more to say artistically.

Trivia

  • The album title HIStory is a play on words and has two meanings: on the one hand it means "history", on the other hand the emphasis is on "his" - that is, "his story" (his story).
  • Although the addition of “Book I” suggested a continuation, “Book II” never appeared.
  • When it was published, three special editions, each limited to around 500,000, were made for Germany, France and the Netherlands. They contain exclusive, similar, approximately twenty seconds long audio messages to the fans in the respective countries. In the German version the message was hidden as the 16th track on the first CD.
  • In spring 1997 a corresponding remix album was released - Blood on the Dance Floor - HIStory in the Mix . In addition to several, partly never released remixes of the new HIStory songs ( Money and 2 Bad , which never appeared as singles and therefore never as regular remixes), the remix album contains five new songs, some of which were originally intended to be released on HIStory ( Morphine and Is It Scary ).
  • Another single was planned for the end of 1997: Smile (as b-side Is It Scary by Blood On The Dance Floor ). The show was canceled, however; Nevertheless, a small number of different pressings that had already been made came into circulation, which are now considered to be coveted rarities among fans.
  • In the rare and unreleased version from 1996 of the short film Ghosts , which was supposed to act as the clip for 2 Bad , the song 2 Bad ran continuously . It was not until the 1997 version that the songs Ghosts and Is It Scary were added later (originally, modified instrumental passages from 2 Bad were played at these points ). Initially, the plan was to release 2 Bad as a single in the US in late 1996.
  • 2001 single CD was called HIStory Greatest Hits released that same tracks contains as Disc 1 of HIStory - Past Present and Future Book I . This HIStory version was also commercially successful.
  • On the box set The Ultimate Collection , released in 2004, you can find a song called In the Back that was originally produced for HIStory .
