Behind the Mask is a synthpop song written by Ryuichi Sakamoto (listed as songwriter) and released for a Seiko commercial in 1978 . 1979 appeared the song, with the English lyrics by Chris Mosdell, on the studio album Solid State Survivor . The song was best known for cover versions by Eric Clapton and Michael Jackson .

Michael Jackson

Jackson recorded his interpretation of the play during the thriller sessions . Quincy Jones brought the song to his attention. However, the song could not be released on the album because there was a legal battle between Jackson and the Yellow Magic Orchestra. A remix of the title by John McClain appeared on the 2010 album Michael .

Greg Phillinganes

The cover version of Michael Jackson's keyboardist Greg Phillinganes appeared on his album Pulse in 1985 . Phillinganes first met Jackson during the recording sessions for Destiny by The Jacksons . Later he was musical director of the Bad World Tour . Phillingane's single hit number 4 on the Billboard Dance / Club Play Songs chart and ranked 77th on the R&B / Hip-Hop Songs chart. In addition to Phillinganes as singer and keyboard player, David Williams (guitar), Brian Banks, Anthony Marinelli ( synthesizer ), Howie Rice (clapping) and Michael Boddicker ( vocoder ) took part in the recording .

Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton recorded the song in 1986 for his August studio album . The single came out in January 1987. Greg Phillinganes brought the song to Clapton and he recorded it with Phillinganes on keyboard. Clapton's version was released as a 45 rpm, 12 "single and 2 × 7" vinyl. The version is assigned to pop-rock and dance-pop , is 4 minutes and 47 seconds long and was produced by Phil Collins and Tom Dowd . In addition to Clapton, Katie Kissoon and Tessa Niles as background singers , Nathan East as bassist and Collins as drummer on the recording. Clapton's single hit number 15 on the UK singles chart.
