It's in the Way That You Use It is a pop rock song written by Eric Clapton and Robbie Robertson and released in October 1986 as a 7 " and 12" singles. The song was created for the film The Color of Money , which was released at the same time. The track also appeared on Clapton's studio album August in November , having already appeared on the soundtrack album .
Clapton described in a radio special that the writing process between him and Robertson was difficult because they could not agree on the rhymes in the stanzas, and wrote the song during phone calls. Originally the song title should be The Gift .
Contributing musicians in addition to Clapton as singer and guitarist and Gary Brooker as background singer were Henry Spinetti on drums, Richard Cottle on synthesizer and Laurence Cottle as bassist. The single reached number 1 on the US Billboard mainstream rock song chart and was number 77 on the UK singles chart.
The music video begins with a pool shot . Then Clapton with his signature Stratocaster is faded in in blue spotlight. In the further course of the video, Clapton can be seen playing and singing the song, interspersed with sequences from the film The Color of Money .
