From the Cradle is the twelfth studio album by British rock musician Eric Clapton . It was released on September 13, 1994 under the labels Duck , Reprise and Warner . The publication won a Grammy Award in 1995 , achieved number one placements in the United States , the United Kingdom and the DA-CH countries , and sold more than 4.5 million copies worldwide. Clapton introduced the album as part of his From the Cradle World Tour .

The album features covers of Clapton's favorite blues songs from childhood to the present day. With the album, Clapton fulfilled a long-cherished wish to publish a pure blues album. He recorded the album in London's Olympic Studios .

reception

Allmusic critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine described Clapton's guitar playing as "moving, original and enchanting", but criticized Clapton's vocal performance. In summary, he stated: "Even with its mistakes, From the Cradle is one of Clapton's best moments." He gave a total of four and a half out of five possible rating units for the album.

In Germany, the album debuted at number 24 in the first week of the chart and remained in the top 30 for two weeks until it occupied the highest position (number 6) for two weeks. For the next four weeks From the Cradle stayed in the top 10 before the release from the ninth chart week only occupied places in the top 40 of the German album charts . Overall, the album remained in the charts for 28 consecutive weeks between October 1994 and April 1995. In Austria, the album reached number one in the Ö3 Austria Top 40 in its third week , stayed in the Top 10 for nine weeks and remained in the charts for a total of 16 weeks from September 1994 to January 1995. In Switzerland, From the Cradle also reached the top of the album charts after a few weeks in the top 40 and remained in the Swiss charts for twenty-two weeks between 1994 and 1995 . In the United States, the album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 with 209,000 units sold in its first week. In the following weeks the album fell to number 2 with 139,000 units sold and to number 3 with 123,000 sales. In the fifth week of the chart, From the Cradle was still at position 3 on the Billboard 200 with 113,000 records sold before the publication in the eighth week occupied the last top 10 position with 76,500 sales. In total, the album stayed in the charts for 41 weeks. In the UK, too, the album immediately reached the top position and remained on the Official Charts Company's hit list for 22 weeks .

Awards for music sales

The album was awarded a gold record in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the United Kingdom . In the United States, From the Cradle was awarded a triple platinum record for more than three million units sold. The publication was also recognized in France, Sweden and Spain. The album sold more than a million times in Europe and was awarded a platinum record by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry . The album was also successful in Australasia and South America and was honored with gold and platinum awards in New Zealand, Australia, Japan and Argentina. Although the publication did not receive a music award in Brazil, it sold more than a quarter of a million copies. From the Cradle was awarded a total of 8 gold and 8 platinum records and has sold more than 4.5 million copies worldwide.
