Cover versions

A live interpretation appeared on the albums The Fool Circle and Snaz by the Scottish rock band Nazareth . In 1988 the band Old Lady Drivers recorded the song for their debut album of the same name. Andy Taylor , guitarist for the Duran Duran group , recorded the song for his solo album Dangerous , released in 1990 . In 2008, country musician Gretchen Wilson used the line "she don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie" for her song Work Hard, Play Harder . In 2011 Cocaine was released as a bonus track on the album Re: (Disc) overed by the band Puddle of Mudd .

Eric Clapton's interpretation

In 1977 Clapton covered the song for his studio album Slowhand ; However, his version only reached the charts as a single from the 1980 album Just One Night . Allmusic critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine found the title to be "relaxed" in Clapton's version. Allmusic's Richard Gilliam called the song one of many enduring Clapton hits, noting: "Even for an artist like Clapton who always delivers high quality work, 'Cocaine' ranks high." The cover hit number 30 on Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. In Canada, the single reached number two on the CHUM and number three on the RPM top singles chart. Eric Clapton himself describes the song as an anti-drug song and called it "pretty clever against cocaine". Because of the double meaning of the song, Clapton did not perform the song in public for a long time. For several years now he has been playing the song again and adding the words “that dirty cocaine” to concerts to emphasize the anti-drug message of the song.
