Layla is a rock song by Eric Clapton . It was written by Clapton and Jim Gordon and appeared on the 1970 album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs by the formation Derek and the Dominos .

In the first part, the two-part song works on motifs from the love story Leila and Majnun by the Persian poet Nezāmi , as well as Clapton's then unrequited love for Pattie Boyd- Harrison. This is followed by an instrumental coda over three minutes long with drummer Jim Gordon on the piano.
Release history
The song reached number 10 on the US charts in 1972. The song gained new fame in the late 1980s after the automobile manufacturer Opel used a re-enacted version of the guitar riff as a jingle in its advertising. As a new recording on the successful album Clapton's Unplugged , the song reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in an acoustic version in the "jazzy" (Clapton) slow shuffle rhythm and received the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song a year later . In 1993 another version made it into the German charts with the former Derek and the Dominos musicians Bobby Whitlock & Jim Gordon & Carl Radle .
