Jim Gordon

Jim Gordon (born July 14, 1945 in Los Angeles , California ; actually James Beck Gordon ) is a Grammy- winning American drummer and songwriter and was a member of Derek and the Dominos .

Life

His career as a drummer began in 1963 when he was used for the Everly Brothers . In the following years he became a much sought-after studio musician and played on numerous albums by well-known stars and bands, including Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys and Imagine by John Lennon .

Between 1969 and 1970 he toured with the band Delaney & Bonnie . At that time, Eric Clapton also played there , who subsequently took over the entire rhythm section, consisting of Gordon, bassist Carl Radle and keyboardist Bobby Whitlock , in his new band Derek and the Dominos . This also participation Gordon came on the album All Things Must Pass by George Harrison concluded.

On the first and only album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (1970), Gordon played not only the drums, but also the piano on the title track Layla , which he had written with Clapton. Even before the second album had been recorded, Derek and the Dominos separated again a year later, including a. due to the death of Duane Allman .

In 1970 Gordon toured with Joe Cocker , 1971 with Traffic , 1972 with Frank Zappa . On the 1974 Zappa album Apostrophe (') he worked on the title track as a drummer and songwriter. He was a regular drummer in a band between 1973 and 1975 with the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band .

In the late 1970s, Gordon began to complain of hallucinations , believing he heard voices in his head. Since his condition did not improve, he withdrew from the public in 1981. In 1984 he was sentenced to at least 16 years in prison for the murder of his mother. Gordon is still imprisoned.

In 2016 Rolling Stone listed him 59th of the 100 best drummers of all time .
