Bobby Whitlock (born March 18, 1948 in Memphis , Tennessee ) is an American keyboardist and was a member of Derek and the Dominos .

Career

Whitlock worked as a studio musician at Stax Records as a teenager . In the late 1960s he became a member of the band Delaney, Bonnie & Friends . At the time, Eric Clapton was on tour with the band as lead guitarist. Clapton then hired Whitlock as a musician for his first solo album. In the meantime, Delaney, Bonnie & Friends had split up, while Whitlock continued to work with Clapton, including playing on George Harrison 's first solo album after the Beatles split up , All Things Must Pass . Immediately afterwards, Clapton formed the band Derek and the Dominos. Whitlock wrote five of the tracks on the album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (including Tell the Truth ) with Clapton, the piece Thorn Tree in the Garden is entirely from his pen. He also worked as a studio musician on the Rolling Stones album Exile on Main Street .

Whitlock released a total of four solo albums in the 1970s. Another album did not follow until the end of the 1990s. He has been working with CoCo Carmel since 2001, his last release was Lovers in 2008.
