Imagine ( English , Imagine ') is the second solo - album of John Lennon after the separation of the Beatles . At the same time, including the three avant-garde albums with his wife Yoko Ono and the live album by the Plastic Ono Band, it is John Lennon's sixth album. It was released on October 8, 1971 in the UK and on September 9, 1971 in the US .

The names of the interpreters on the record label were John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band (with the Flux Fiddlers) .

History of origin

Before the release of the second studio album Imagine , John Lennon and Yoko Ono released two singles under the names John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band (Yoko Ono / Plastic Ono Band) and under the pseudonym Elastic Oz Band , with John Lennon the A-side on the first single and Yoko Ono sang the B-side , while the second single featured Bill Elliot on the A-side and John Lennon on the B-side:

  • Power to the People / Open Your Box (John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band - Released March 12, 1971 [US: March 22, 1971])
  • God Save Us / Do the OZ (Elastic Oz Band - Released July 16, 1971 [US: July 5, 1971])

Both singles were politically motivated, wrote John Lennon Power to the People after an interview with Tariq Ali, editor of the left-wing British magazine Red Mole . The recordings took place on January 22nd and February 15th, 1971 under the production direction of Phil Spector, John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

The single God Save Us / Do the OZ was recorded on May 22, 1971 with the same production team, before the album Imagine was recorded. Ringo Starr , Klaus Voormann and John Lennon acted as studio musicians . The A side was sung by Bill Elliot and the B side by Lennon. A version of the song God Save Us sung by John Lennon was released on the John Lennon Anthology box set in November 1998 under the title God Save Oz . The proceeds from the single were to benefit the editors of UK magazine Oz , who were facing legal charges.

Entrance gate from Tittenhurst Park

The recordings for the album essentially took place from May 24 to 29, 1971 in Lennon's own studio, Ascot Sound Studios , in Tittenhurst Park . Only the song It's so Hard was recorded on February 11, 1971. It was to be the first and last album by John Lennon, which was created at Ascot Sound Studios . Lennon was supported by numerous well-known musicians during the recordings. For example, George Harrison played guitar on five tracks (Crippled Inside , I Don't Want To Be a Soldier, Mama , Gimme Some Truth , Oh My Love and How Do You Sleep?) . Klaus Voormann can be heard on the electric bass , Alan White and Jim Keltner shared the drums and Nicky Hopkins was responsible for most of the piano parts. Mike Pinder of the Moody Blues was originally supposed to play a mellotron when recording the track I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier, Mama , because this was defective, he played the tambourine instead . Lennon traveled to the USA to mix the recordings and completed the album there in the Record Plant East Studios in New York City on June 4 and 5, 1971 with producer Phil Spector and arranger Torrie Zito , who was responsible for the orchestrations recorded by The Flux Fiddler .

The Steinway piano on which John Lennon composed the song Imagine

In contrast to the previous album John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band , the musical influence of Phil Spector was clearly visible. John Lennon said about the album Imagine in comparison to the previous album : “[…] it's a bit cleaner looking, but the basic message is the same, just more acceptable to people” ( German : “It [ Imagine ] looks a bit cleaner but the basic message is the same, only more acceptable to the people ”).

The recordings for the album were also documented on film, so the film Imagine included the following songs:

  1. Imagine
  2. Crippled Inside
  3. Jealous Guy
  4. Don't Count the Waves (Yoko Ono)
  5. It's so hard
  6. Mrs. Lennon (Yoko Ono)
  7. I don't wanna be a soldier, mom
  8. Mind Train (Yoko Ono)
  9. Power to the People / Gimme Some Truth
  10. Midsummer New York (Yoko Ono)
  11. Oh my love
  12. How do you sleep?
  13. How?
  14. Oh yoko!

Further footage was used for the documentary Imagine: John Lennon , which was shown in cinemas from October 1988. The film was released on VHS videocassette in September 1989 . It was re-released on DVD in November 2005 with an additional DVD containing bonus material.

All of the songs were by John Lennon, one of which - Oh My Love - was written in collaboration with Yoko Ono. Parallel to the album Imagine , the Yoko Ono album Fly was created as a kind of "twin album" , but its musical orientation was predominantly experimental.

The title track Imagine is one of John Lennon's most successful compositions and describes the vision of a better and more just world. With his remarks regarding religion in the song Imagine , Lennon probably offended the religious feelings of his later murderer Mark David Chapman , which probably mainly led to the assassination. From the 2018 album re-release, Yoko Ono was performed as a co-composer.

Crippled Inside was played by the Beatles for the first time during the Get-Back session on January 24, 1969, the text describes that despite the perfect exterior facade, you cannot hide your poor mental state.

The melody of the song for Jealous Guy was written during the Beatles' stay in India in the spring of 1968. The original title was Child of Nature . A demo recording of the Beatles was released on November 9, 2018 on the re-release of the album The Beatles . The text of the song Jealous Guy is a self-description and an admission of guilt in the relationship with his wife Yoko Ono.

It's so hard is a blues-like piece of music.

The two most political songs on the album are I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier, Mama and Gimme Some Truth , which was also rehearsed during the recording of the Beatles' planned Get Back album.

Oh My Love and Oh Yoko! address the love for Yoko Ono. There is a demo recording of Oh My Love from November 1968 and Oh Yoko! a recording from June 1969, so that these titles were not a new Lennon composition either.

How Do You Sleep is a reckoning with Paul McCartney and a reaction to his 1971 Ram album. The line of text “those freaks was right when they said you was dead” is an allusion to the Paul-is-dead conspiracy theory. The song contains other claims, including that Paul McCartney would surround himself with "yes-men" and that John Lennon believed his music was inferior and that his career would only last a year or two. In response to Paul McCartney, the song Dear Friend was viewed from his Wild Life album.

How was composed by John Lennon during his stay in the USA in 1970 and lyrically fits the themes of the album John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band .

Additional recordings of tracks from the album and one other song from the recording sessions, Well (Baby Please Don't Go) composed by Walter Ward and recorded by Lennon on February 16, 1971, were first released on the John Lennon Anthology box set in 1998 . An instrumental version of How Do You Sleep appeared on the album The US vs. John Lennon . The songs I'm the Greatest and San Francisco Bay Blues , which were partially recorded during the Imagine sessions , were only released on bootlegs . I'm the Greatest was re-recorded as a demo for Ringo Starr in March 1973 .

In Great Britain the album was also sold as a record with a quadraphonic mix made by Allan Steckler .

Imagine was an artistic and commercial success and was awarded " gold " multiple times. It reached number 1 on the US Billboard charts. In Great Britain the album stayed in the top 10 of the album hit parade for 18 weeks and also reached number one in the charts; in Germany, the album placed 10th on the charts.

In 2002, the music magazine sat Rolling Stone Album Imagine at number 76 of its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time .

Cover design

The cover design was done by Yoko Ono. The cover photo is from Peter Fordham.

The cover of the McCartney album Ram shows Paul McCartney holding a ram by its horns on the front . John Lennon was a satire on the cover a photo of themselves and a pig add similar pose and put it as a photo Imagine at.

Both albums are in a cardboard box.

2018 re-release

On October 5, 2018, the most extensive re-publication of the Imagine recordings to date appeared. The songs on the album were remixed by Paul Hicks at Abbey Road Studios and Sear Sound Studios. For the remixing, Yoko Ono gave the instruction that the sound of the album and the vocals of John Lennon should be more clearly audible. In the original mix of the album, the strings were mixed in mono, in the remix in stereo. A 5.1 mix was also made. The CDs were mastered by Gavin Lurssen, Reuben Cohen and Paul Hicks at Lurssen Mastering. The mastering of the vinyl double album took place in the Capitol Studios.
