The John Lennon Collection is the second best-of compilation album of John Lennon after the separation of the Beatles , and it is the first posthumously published album after Lennon's death in 1980. At the same time it is including seven solo studio albums of the three vanguard -albums with John Lennon's 13th album by his wife Yoko Ono and the live album of the Plastic Ono Band . It was released on November 1, 1982 in the UK and on November 8, 1982 in the US .
History of origin
In November 1982, EMI in Europe and Geffen Records in the US released a compilation album by John Lennon with a different track list. In the USA the songs Happy Xmas (War Is Over) and Stand by Me are not included on the LP version . On the occasion of the LP's release, Love was released as a single in Europe. With the exception of Jealous Guy , the titles contributed by EMI are exclusively singles. ( Roxy Music released a cover version of Jealous Guy in February 1981 and peaked at number one in the UK; in November 1985 the Lennon version was also released on single in the UK). Geffen Records contributed six of the seven John Lennon titles (excluding Cleanup Time ) on the album Double Fantasy . # 9 Dream was edited (shortened) especially for the vinyl album. Furthermore, Give Peace a Chance (worldwide) and Happy Xmas (War Is Over) (in Europe) were completely available on one LP for the first time.
In 1989 EMI took over the rights to the recordings of Double Fantasy and released a CD version of the album The John Lennon Collection with the bonus tracks Move Over Ms. L (first CD release) and Cold Turkey .
Cover design
The cover pictures were photographed by Annie Leibovitz on December 8, 1980, the anniversary of John Lennon's death.
