John Lennon Anthology is the title of a four-CD compilation album by John Lennon that contains 94 tracks that had not been (legally) released in this form before and it is the tenth posthumously released album after Lennon's death in 1980. Simultaneously including the eight solo studio albums, the three avant-garde albums with his wife Yoko Ono , the two live albums, the two interview albums and the compilation albums, it is John Lennon's 22nd album. It was released on November 2, 1998 in the UK and November 3, 1998 in the US .

History of origin

Between January 25, 1988 and March 23, 1992, 218 programs under the title the lost lennon tapes were broadcast on US radio. As a result, these unpublished recordings were also distributed through bootlegs , making them accessible to a larger audience. But it wasn't until six and a half years after the last radio show was broadcast that this four-CD box was released as a compilation album with unreleased tracks, outtakes, demos and live performances by John Lennon.

Originally, Mark Lewisohn , who was already responsible for putting together the Lennon CD box , was commissioned to create a list of songs that would be suitable for publication. At the beginning of 1994, the preparatory work was completed, so that CD test pressings were made, but further work was then stopped. Four years later, in 1998, Rob Stevens and Yoko Ono finally finished the CD box, essentially using the compilation by Mark Lewisohn. Only four songs were omitted: an alternative version of Cold Turkey , a demo recordings of Give Me Some Truth and Luck of the Irish, and the song Just Because , which ends with a farewell to Paul McCartney , George Harrison , Ringo Starr and the audience.

The four CDs each have their own covers (drawings by John Lennon, partially colored ) and are in a cardboard slipcase; further content is a 60-page booklet containing song texts, explanations of the individual tracks and the CDs, an introduction by Yoko Ono and explanations of John Lennon's artistic activities by Anthony De Curtis.

Only Yoko Ono and Rob Stevens are mentioned as producers, which probably only applies to the production of the CD box, as other producers are specified in the accompanying book for the music.

The four CDs each have their own titles, which are intended to characterize the respective phase of life of John Lennon:

  • CD 1: Ascot (period 1969–1971)
  • CD 2: New York City (period 1971–1973)
  • CD 3: The Lost Weekend (period 1973–1974)
  • CD 4: Dakota (period 1975–1980)

With this selection, however, the following songs were not correctly assigned chronologically: CD 2: Goodnight Vienna (1974) and Real Love (1979), CD 3: Stranger's Room (1980), CD 4: Only You (And You Alone) (1974).

The home demo Mind Games was recorded in 1970, but was not completed for the album Mind Games until 1973 and is therefore correctly assigned.

Further previously unpublished recordings appeared after the death of John Lennon (in part) on the albums Live in New York City (1986), Menlove Ave. (1986), Acoustic (2004), The US vs. John Lennon (2006) and Signature Box - CD 11: Home Tapes (2010).

Due to the aforementioned radio series the lost lennon tapes , there is evidence that other songs by John Lennon are unpublished.

Information on individual songs

  • John Lennon gave Ringo Starr his composition I'm the Greatest for the Ringo album . When the piece was recorded on March 13, 1973, Lennon played the piano and took over the backing vocals, George Harrison played the guitar, Ringo Starr sang and played drums. Only Paul McCartney was missing for a Beatles reunion. However, the bass was played by Klaus Voormann and the organ by Billy Preston . The version that was released on the Anthology album is a studio version with Lennon singing.
  • The song Grow Old With Me includes an additional, post-recorded orchestration by George Martin , the song originally appeared in 1984 as a demo recording on the album Milk and Honey .

Cover design

The cover design was done by Roger Gorman / Reiner Design NYC and Yoko Ono. The cover drawing is by John Lennon.
