Imagine: John Lennon (Music from the Motion Picture) is a soundtrack album of a documentary about John Lennon that contains two previously unreleased recordings and is the sixth posthumously released album after Lennon's death in 1980. It also includes eight solo studio albums , the three avant-garde albums with his wife Yoko Ono , the two live albums, the interview album and the compilation albums, John Lennon's 18th album. It was released on October 10, 1988 in the UK and on October 4, 1988 in the US .

History of origin

On October 25, 1988, the documentary about John Lennon called imagine: john lennon premiered at Canon Cinema in London with the presence of Yoko Ono , Sean Lennon and Cynthia Lennon . The director of the 100-minute film was Andrew Solt, who also wrote the script with Sam Egan. Andrew Solt was able to compile this cross-career documentary about John Lennon from over 200 hours of footage. Audio commentary by John Lennon, mostly from interviews, underpins the film.

The album includes recordings of John Lennon with the Beatles as well as as a solo artist. (The first album that performed both Beatles and solo material was The Best of George Harrison from 1976.) The song Real Love , recorded in June 1980, here with acoustic guitar accompaniment by John Lennon, was released as a demo version. Further releases followed in 1998 on the box set John Lennon Anthology and 1995 as a revised version of the Beatles. In Imagine (Rehearsal) is a short to be played studio version. On A Day in the Life , the applause at the beginning of the song was mixed away; this version was used from 1993 for the CD version of the Beatles album 1967-1970 .

publication

It was first published in CD format in October 1988; for the first time with a John Lennon release simultaneously with the vinyl (double) album. The CD release from 1988 has not yet been remastered.

The film was released on VHS video cassette in September 1989. It was re-released on DVD in November 2005 with an additional DVD containing bonus material.
