At the same time, including the two instrumental albums from the 1960s, the studio albums and the live album, it is Harrison's eighth album. It was released on November 8, 1976 in the US and on November 19, 1976 in the UK and

History of origin

After the compilation album Shaved Fish by John Lennon and Blast from Your Past by Ringo Starr in October 1975, a compilation album by George Harrison followed a year later. Except for Paul McCartney , no ex-Beatle renewed the record deal with EMI after the deal with Apple Records expired on January 26, 1976. While the other compilation albums of the ex-Beatles consisted exclusively of solo material by the artists, page one of the long-playing record Best of George Harrison was exclusively stocked with Beatles songs that George Harrison had written. Page two includes six of eight Harrison's single A-pages that were released by Apple Records by 1976, with the singles Ding Dong, Ding Dong and This Guitar (Can't Keep from Crying) being dispensed with.

George Harrison was neither satisfied with the title nor with the composition of the songs, especially the fact that Beatles songs had been added bothered him. An alternative suggestion by Harrison himself was ignored by the EMI.

In February 1977 the album was awarded gold in the USA for 500,000 copies sold.

Cover design

The album was released in Europe and the USA, each with different cover designs. The European cover was designed by Cream, the photo by Bob Cato. Roy Kohara and Michael Bryan were responsible for the design in the USA.

Republication

The first publication in CD format took place in May 1987 without bonus tracks. The CD is accompanied by an eight-page illustrated booklet. The track Bangla Desh was only available on this compilation album until September 2014. The CD release from 1987 has not yet been remastered.
