Taxman ( English tax collector ) is a song by the British rock band The Beatles . Text and composition are by George Harrison , who also sang the piece. The song appeared as the opening track on the 1966 Beatles album Revolver . It was the Beatles' first album where the first song was not by John Lennon and / or Paul McCartney .

Emergence

Harrison reportedly wrote the song as an ironic reaction to what he considered to be marginal tax rates of up to 95 percent for high earners (the Beatles now all earn over a million pounds a year). Taxman was recorded on April 20-21, 1966 at Abbey Road Studios , London . Mixes took place on May 16, 1966 and June 21, 1966. The guitar solo was recorded by Paul McCartney. Harrison played the rhythm guitar , Starr contributed the drums and percussion and McCartney the bassline , while Lennon accompanied the song on the tambourine . The backing vocals are from Lennon and McCartney.
