Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Magical Mystery Tour
(1967)

Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (short: Sgt. Pepper ) is the eighth studio album by the British band The Beatles , which was released in Great Britain on May 26, 1967, including the compilation album A Collection of Beatles Oldies , it was their ninth album there. In Germany, the album was released on May 30, 1967, here it was their twelfth album, including the two compilation albums. In the USA it was published on June 1, 1967, for the first time in a form almost identical to the original in Great Britain; here it was her 14th album.

The album is considered to be one of the first concept albums in pop music and a milestone in the genre.

Emergence

The release of the album reinforced the change in pop music that began in 1966. Hardly any other pop music album has been produced with a comparable effort. In addition, Sgt. Pepper fit into the so-called " summer of love " due to his psychedelic playfulness .

George Martin mentioned the beginning of the recording: “In November (1966) the Beatles returned to the studio for the first time since they decided not to go on tour. They were pretty fed up. They had been in a lot of trouble all year, and Brian Epstein feared they would go downhill. He thought it was the end of the Beatles, and in 1966 there were all sorts of signs of it. There was the disaster in the Philippines , the falling audiences at some of the shows, and they were fed up with being prisoners of their fame. "

Paul McCartney said of the original idea of the album: “It was at the beginning of the hippie era and all over America there was a shimmering hippie atmosphere. I started thinking about what a really crazy name for a band could be. At that time there were many groups with names like 'Laughing Joe and His Medicine Band' […] with long interlaced names […]. I brought an idea back to the boys in London: 'Since we're trying to distance ourselves from ourselves - get away from touring and do more surreal things - why don't we become an alter ego band like Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band? '"

According to Paul McCartney and producer George Martin , Sgt. Pepper was inspired by the Beach Boys' 1966 album Pet Sounds . “Without Pet Sounds , Sgt. Pepper would not have existed. Sgt. Pepper was an attempt to match pet sounds, ”commented George Martin. At the same time prevented release of Sgt. Pepper the appearance of Brian Wilson's album Smile , which is partially a response to the seventh album by the Beatles, Revolver , was supposed to be. Paul McCartney: "The biggest influence was, as I have said many times, the Beach Boys album Pet Sounds , and it was mainly the harmonies that I stole from there." The second major musical influence is the debut album Freak Out! by Frank Zappa . Paul McCartney considered Sgt. Pepper the Freak Out! the Beatles. The album inspired the Beatles to further musical experiments.

During its creation, the album was conceived as a total work of art (according to Ringo Starr as a “show album” and comparable to a rock opera ), which should reflect joie de vivre and take into account a new zeitgeist (“A splendid time is guaranteed for all”; German : 'Eine wonderful time is guaranteed for everyone ', from: Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! ). A kind of concept album with profound, sarcastic , interlaced and surrealistic lyrics was created. In order to achieve this, the Beatles exhausted all studio technical resources of the time. So the whole album is only produced with the help of the four-track technique, whereby special techniques were used, such as the extremely difficult parallel use of two four-track devices due to wow and flutter. Although eight-track recorders already existed in the US, they were not installed in the UK until late 1967. A Day in the Life presented eight-track technology for the first time in Great Britain using two synchronously switched four-track tape machines.

Commenting on the recording, George Martin said, “I introduced the Beatles to some new sounds and ideas, but when Sgt. Pepper came about they wanted everything out of their bag of tricks. They accepted everything I could find. "

Ringo Starr on George Martin: “When we were working on Sgt. Pepper, George Martin had really become an essential part of it all. We put in strings, brass, piano, etc. and George was the only one who could write it all down. He became part of the band. "

The Beatles also changed optically. Her mushroom hairstyles were trimmed and McCartney, Lennon and Starr had mustaches , Harrison initially had a full beard , but also a mustache for the album cover. The very short-sighted Lennon also bought round wire-rimmed glasses , which became his trademark.

A 40-piece orchestra and the Mellotron were used to create the surrealist sound structures , so that this music could not be reproduced live in 1967. The result was an album that, as one of the pioneers of rock music, showed and opened up new musical and technical possibilities. The recordings were made for the first time without upcoming tour stress, since the Beatles had given their last concert in San Francisco on August 29, 1966 in Candlestick Park . For the first time, the Beatles also printed their lyrics on the record cover to make the lyrical meaning visible. The tracks were largely inspired by the everyday life of the musicians.

“The Beatles' message has matured into a message of love, full of Hindu influences. The message goes to those people who hide behind a wall of illusion: 'When you've seen beyond yourself / then you may find / peace of mind / is waiting there / with our love / we could save the world / if they only knew '(song: Within You Without You ). "

- magazine it : July 2, 1967

Sgt. Pepper hit the zeitgeist of the time, although musically it is not a pure psychedelic album like Pink Floyd's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn . Some pieces like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds , A Day in the Life, and Within You Without You , reveal their psychedelic origins. The first two of these were not played by several radio stations because they were assumed to have a connection to drugs, lyrically and musically.

Paul McCartney said: “The mood of the album corresponded to the zeitgeist because we ourselves fit into the mood of the time. There was clearly a popular movement there [...] We weren't really trying to satisfy that movement - we were just a part of it as we had always been. I claim that the Beatles were not the leaders but the speakers of their generation. "

George Harrison (right) in front of Abbey Road Studios , 1967

George Harrison : “The summer of 1967 […] there was definitely an atmosphere: you could feel what was going on with our friends - and with people who had similar goals in the US - even though we were miles apart. You could just pick up the atmosphere. "

Paul McCartney was mostly responsible for the pop songs, John Lennon and George Harrison for the psychedelic component. This can be heard on Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite , which - electronically alienated - pays homage to the days of the Victorian circus. The climax from a psychedelic point of view is Within You Without You , which was shaped by Harrison's Sitar . Harrison's interest in meditation and Indian philosophy comes into play here; with the help of psychoactive substances , it symbolizes the search for truth and meaning. Even if McCartney's compositions on the album tended more towards pop music, he nonetheless became the artistic head of the group; a status that had hitherto been attributed more to Lennon. So it was McCartney's idea to use Sgt. Pepper's fictional band as a comprehensive concept, including the cover design. Brian Epstein , the manager of the Beatles, did not approve of the cover and asked for a brown cardboard cover for the album. However, the Beatles' idea of pressing the album on colorful vinyl was not implemented.

Label of the German LP pressing (re-edition 1969)

At the request of the record company EMI , two songs from the recordings for the album, Penny Lane / Strawberry Fields Forever, were released as a single in February 1967. The single became the 13th number one hit in the US and the fourth number one hit in Germany. In Great Britain it was the first Beatles single since Please Please Me , which only reached second place in the British charts. George Martin later regretted giving in to the record company's wish and described it as the biggest mistake of his career not to leave the two songs on the album.

On April 20, 1967, the last recordings were made in the last mixes for the album took place a day later, on April 21, 1967. In the time of origin of the album the Beatles recorded four more songs, in addition to Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane , the Song Only a Northern Song , which was only released in January 1969 on the album Yellow Submarine , and the previously unreleased track Carnival of Light . Various studio musicians were used during the recordings for the album. In the period between December 6, 1966 and April 2, 1967, the Beatles required a production time of over 700 hours (mostly at night) four to six times a week on 129 recording days. The production costs of 165,000 euros (25,000 pounds ) today  were extremely high for the conditions at the time, and the use of 40 orchestral musicians and wind sections had to be financed from this.

In conclusion, the album was rated as follows:

Paul McCartney: “After the record was finished, I loved it. For me it was a huge step forward [...] "

John Lennon: “Soberly, it was nothing more than an album called Sgt Pepper , on which the pieces of music were linked. Back then it was a wonderful idea, but it no longer matters today. "

George Harrison: "[...] I didn't really enjoy recording the album on the whole." "I liked Sgt Pepper when it was finished. I knew it seemed different to people and I was very happy with the cover concept. "

Ringo Starr: " Sgt Pepper seemed to capture the mood of the year, and it also enabled a lot of other people to start from there and get going."

George Martin: “When you look back on Pepper , you can tell that it really was an icon. It was the record of that time and it probably changed the understanding of recordings, but we didn't do that consciously. "

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was originally supposed to come out as a double album with a different series of titles. Due to financial concerns of the record company, it was officially released in its now known form on June 1, 1967. However, this date was partially brought forward to May 26, 1967. The reason was that the private broadcaster Radio London had already broadcast the album in full on May 12, 1967 and henceforth advertised that it was the first station with the record.

The album debuted at number one on the UK charts on May 31, 1967, where it remained for 22 weeks. It had enough gold record sales on its release day and was the Beatles' eighth number one album in the UK. In Germany it was the seventh album by the Beatles, which reached number one on the charts. There were over 300,000 pre-orders for the album in the UK. In the US, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band also reached number one on the charts, where it remained for 15 weeks, making it the Beatles' tenth number one album. In January 1997, the album went multi-platinum in the US for eleven million copies. No single was released from the album in 1967, the title track was only released as a single in 1978. On June 25, 1967, the Beatles set a worldwide television audience in the BBC telecast Our World by satellite broadcast her new single All You Need Is Love live before that, however, was not included on the album and was released on July 7 1967th

By January 1, 1971, the album had sold around seven million times. In 2009, it was second in the UK's best-selling album rankings after Queen's 1981 album Greatest Hits . The American music magazine Rolling Stone published a list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" in 2003, in which Sgt. Pepper had been voted number one.

At the 1968 Grammy Awards , Sgt. Pepper won four awards in the categories "Best Album", "Best Cover (Graphics)", "Best Technical Recording (non-classical)" and "Best Contemporary Album".

The album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was released in a mono and a stereo version. In Germany the album was only distributed in stereo mix. Sound engineer Richard Lush, one of Geoff Emerick's assistants , said that the only correct version of the album was mono, as the Beatles were always present during mono mixes. The stereo mixes were carried out by George Martin, Geoff Emerick and Richard Lush without the Beatles in a few days (March 6th, 4th, 6th, 7th, 17th and 20th), some sound corrections were made and effects were changed .

For example, the mixes of the mono version differ significantly from the stereo version for some songs: Within You Without You (another laughter at the end of the song), Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (recap) (four extra drum hits can be heard at the beginning of the mono version and the audience noises are different from the stereo version), She's Leaving Home (the mono version runs much faster), Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (the lead guitar and the audience noises are louder in the mono version), Good Morning Good Morning (the Mixing of the lead guitar and the animal sounds are different), Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! (the organ sounds are louder in the mono version) and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (the singing sounds more "psychedelic" in the mono version).

Other - unused - recording versions / mixes of the songs Strawberry Fields Forever , Penny Lane , A Day in the Life , Good Morning Good Morning , Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! , Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds , Within You Without You (Instrumental) and Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) can be found on the album Anthology 2 . There is extensive unreleased material on the May 2017 re-release of Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album .

Cover design

Beatles Museum, Liverpool

The cover of the album was designed - in collaboration with Paul McCartney - by the gallery owner Robert Fraser as art director , the pop-art artist Peter Blake , his wife Jann Haworth , Al Vandenberg and the photographer Michael Cooper . The photo session took place on March 30, 1967 at Michael Cooper's Chelsea Manor Studios in London. The album cover is an outstanding work in the history of cover art. The group picture with flowers shows the Beatles in colorful fantasy uniforms, surrounded by a group of 70 personalities from all over the world, assembled and united as a community of the "new free people" that Timothy Leary had spoken of. They had one thing in common: They tried to implement the earthly opposites of this world in some form in a mind-changing way. They represented many of the influences that shaped the Beatles and their music themselves.

In front of it, in a flowerbed, is the word BEATLES composed of red hyacinths with a guitar made of yellow hyacinths in front of it, surrounded by utensils such as mobile televisions, Buddha statues, water pipes , garden gnomes or Japanese stone figures. The idea of designing the band name with flowers came from Jann Haworth, he said.

The following celebrities and objects can be seen on the cover (number in brackets if there are several appearances):

Arrangement of the people on the cover: (1)  Sri Yukteswar Giri , (2)  Aleister Crowley , (3)  Mae West , (4)  Lenny Bruce , (5)  Karlheinz Stockhausen , (6)  WC Fields , (7)  Carl Gustav Jung , (8)  Edgar Allan Poe , (9)  Fred Astaire , (10)  Richard Merkin , (11) The Varga Girl, (12)  Leo Gorcey , (13)  Huntz Hall , (14)  Simon Rodia , (15)  Bob Dylan , (16)  Aubrey Beardsley , (17)  Robert Peel , (18) Aldous Huxley , (19) Dylan Thomas , (20) Terry Southern , (21)  Dion DiMucci , (22)  Tony Curtis , (23)  Wallace Berman , ( 24)  Tommy Handley , (25)  Marilyn Monroe , (26)  William S. The doubles shown come from Madame Tussaud's London wax museum . John Lennon also wanted Jesus , Elvis Presley and Adolf Hitler for the cover. Hitler's cardboard display was not used during the preparations for the recording because there were concerns about a controversy that the Beatles might want to glorify him - and thus National Socialism . An image of Jesus was not even prepared because of the media hype after Lennon's statement ("We [the Beatles] are more popular than Jesus ") a few months earlier. Mahatma Gandhi was featured on the original recording, but was retouched in the finished image as EMI feared they would accuse the band of making fun of Gandhi. Actor Leo Gorcey was also subsequently removed , as he expected payment for showing his likeness on the album cover.

The Shirley Temple doll to the right of the photo, made by Jann Haworth, wears a sweatshirt that reads “Welcome The Rolling Stones ” and “Good Guys”. The sweatshirt came from Michael Cooper's young son Adam.

Ringo Starr said of the cover: “Sgt. Pepper was a special album, so we wanted to dress up when it came to the album cover, we wanted to be these people, all the “peppers”. That was flower power at its peak. It was love and peace, it was a fabulous time for me and the world. "

Paul McCartney said of the cover: “We got artists involved in this. I was very good friends with the London art dealer Robert Fraser, a guy with one of the best visual looks I've ever known. It was very exciting to be friends with him back then and I showed him the whole cover idea for the album. He represented the artist Peter Blake and was very close friends with the photographer Michael Cooper. Robert said, 'Let Michael take some pictures. Peter can create a background and then we put that together in a collage. ' John wanted some eccentric guys like Hitler and Jesus because he just wanted to be bold and naughty. He liked taking risks and I knew what he was doing. I didn't agree with that, but he was just trying to be eccentric, that was all. Robert Fraser and Michael Cooper were pals with the Rolling Stones, as were we, and they said, 'It would be great if there was a reference to the Stones here.' So we put them in a corner. "

Several artists later parodied this cover, including Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention on their 1968 album We're Only in It for the Money and the Cologne group Bläck Fööss on their album Et es 20 Johr jenau jenau her now . There is even an official Russian version with Cyrillic letters on the drum.

The back of the cover is held in a strong shade of red. For the first time on a Beatles album, the lyrics are listed in full. On the back photo you can see the Beatles in the same fantasy uniforms as on the front. Only Paul McCartney has his back to the viewer and appears taller than his colleagues - for conspiracy theorists an indication that McCartney was replaced by a doppelganger in 1966 after he was allegedly killed in a traffic accident (see: Paul is dead ).

On the inside of the flip cover, all four Beatles are again shown in their fantasy uniforms. The band members wear the Order of the British Empire, awarded to them as members in 1965 . Like all the others on the cover, this photo was taken by Michael Cooper.

SLC Pepper - Life-size mural by Jann Haworth in Salt Lake City , Utah

In 2004, Jann Haworth began in Salt Lake City in the US -Bundesstaat Utah work on SLC PEPPER , a 15 meter wide and 9 meter high mural that is supposed to represent a contemporary bourgeois version of Sgt Pepper cover. Together with more than 30 local, national and international artists, Haworth created a new set of “Heroes of the 21st Century” in stenciled graffiti , each of which replaces one of the characters originally portrayed. Only outlines of the Beatles can be seen. SLC PEPPER is to be further developed as an ongoing art project.

While the needle of the turntable slides over the outlet groove on the second side of the LP, a high-pitched whistle of 15 kHz can be heard on early pressings  , which should arouse the attention of listening dogs. In the ( concentric ) end groove itself there is the hidden title Sgt.Pepper's Inner Groove (The Run-Out Groove) , which itself only lasts about two seconds, but is repeated indefinitely (only on manually operated record players ). Some claim that the phrase “Will Paul return as superman?” Is played backwards . to hear (see Paul is dead ), others hear the sentence “We'll fuck you like the supermen”. In the 1997 biography of Barry Miles, McCartney took up this point and told of people who had complained to him about the "messes" in the outlet groove. He made it clear that the sentence he remembered was “Couldn't really be any other”. Walter Everett, on the other hand, interprets McCartney's phrase as “Never could be any other way” and cites April 21, 1967 as the recording date. The whistle and the empty groove were omitted in later pressings or were added as a normal track after A Day in the Life .

Sgt. Pepper's Inner Groove was not pressed on the US version of the album, it only appeared on March 24, 1980 on the US album The Beatles Rarities .

Billy Shears

Billy Shears was the pen name of Ringo Starr on the album. Shears is only mentioned in the title track, where he is announced as the singer for the following song With a Little Help From My Friends :

"So let me introduce to you the one and only Billy Shears."

The name Billy Shears appeared a second time in Ringo Starr's song I'm the Greatest (a composition by John Lennon) in 1973 :

"Yes, my name is Billy Shears, you know it has been for so many years."

It is sometimes presented in connection with the Paul-is-dead theory mentioned above that Billy Shears was in fact a reference to the singer William Shears Campbell , who replaced McCartney after his (alleged) death.

In the 1978 film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band produced by the RSO , the character Billy Shears is played by the British musician Peter Frampton .

Homage

In 1988 the tribute album "Sgt. Pepper Knew My Father" was released for the 21st anniversary. a. the number 1 hits "With A Little Help From My Frieds" by Wet Wet Wet and "She's Leaving Home" by Billy Bragg were included.

In 1992 the album was recorded by the American band Big Daddy in the vocal style of the 1950s.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary in 2017, the Second-Hand Orchestra, founded for this purpose, brought a version in Swiss dialect to the stage. In addition to adaptations of the Pepper album, own songs related to the album were added.
