She's Leaving Home ( English She leaves her home ) is a song by The Beatles , which as the sixth track on the LP Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was released. It was written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon , the former having the original idea. As usual, Lennon / McCartney are named as the copyright holder .

Recordings

The recordings took place on March 17th and 20th, 1967 at Abbey Road Studios . The instrumental accompaniment is provided by four violins , two violas , two cellos , a double bass and a harp . The arrangement was written by the music producer Mike Leander , George Martin was otherwise busy. None of the band members played an instrument. On the first day, six slightly different versions were recorded in the studio and finally the first was selected. The vocal parts were added three days later. In addition to McCartney's lead voice, Lennon sings an opposing voice that quotes typical sayings of his aunt Mimi (“We gave her everything money could buy”).

The song is based on a message from the Daily Mail . She reported on February 27, 1967 about 17-year-old Melanie Coe, who had run away from home and disappeared. The song was often seen as an expression of the generation conflicts of the time, as numerous young people broke out of the affluent society to try out alternative ways of life.

Award

She's Leaving Home won the 1968 Ivor Novello Award in the Best British Song, Musically and Lyrically category .
