Anthology 2 is the second compilation album of a total of three double albums by the British group The Beatles , which contains previously legally unreleased recordings. The album was released on March 18, 1996 in Great Britain, on March 19, 1996 in the USA and on March 13, 1996 in Germany.

Anthology 2 is the fourth album by the Beatles, which after their separation contains previously unreleased recording material.

prehistory

At the end of 1969, the Beatles' first long-playing bootleg record entitled Kum Back was sold illegally. The songs of the bootleg probably came from the acetate pressing of March 1969 of the then planned Get Back and later Let It Be album. In the 1970s, further recordings of the Let It Be sessions, BBC recordings and various recordings of Beatles concerts followed. Legally only the live album The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl was released in May 1977.

Bootleg album Kum Back

In 1981 the sound engineer John Barrett, employed by Abbey Road Studios , was commissioned to catalog the recordings of the Beatles, in the process he discovered not only different versions of published songs but also previously unknown songs. Between July and September 1983, some of these songs were presented to an audience during a multi-media show at Abbey Road Studios . A music cassette containing some of the recordings ended up in the hands of bootleggers who then illegally published the material.

Geoff Emerick , a former Beatles sound engineer, first put songs together in 1984 for an album of unreleased Beatles material. In order to meet the tonal requirements of the 1980s, almost all tracks were shortened by cuts or fadeouts and remixed. The release date of the album named Sessions was definitely February 1985. Only then were the Beatles Paul McCartney , George Harrison and Ringo Starr , who were still alive , and the representatives of John Lennon, who died in 1980, informed about the Sessions project . The three Beatles immediately intervened against the publication and declared that they would like to discuss the format of the publication. A copy of a music cassette from the Sessions album also fell into the hands of bootleggers , whereupon the Sessions album was illegally distributed.

In 1988, the first bootleg series was released Ultra Rare Tacks Volume 1-6 by Swingin 'Pig presented, the other unknown studio versions of the Beatles in excellent sound quality. The release of the Bootlegs meant that a wider audience became aware that unreleased recordings of the Beatles existed.

The book by Mark Lewisohn : The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions: The Official Story of the Abbey Road Years from 1988 chronologically lists all of the Beatles' studio recordings in Abbey Road Studios between 1962 and 1970 and officially documented for the first time which songs were included were unpublished at the time.

The first unpublished recordings of appearances on BBC radio broadcasts then appeared on November 30, 1994 on the album Live at the BBC .

After all right-wing parties had reached an agreement, George Martin began on May 22, 1995, with the occasional support of Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, to listen to around 600 recordings of the Beatles, to select them for the albums of the Anthology series, to edit them and to remix them. The decision was then made to release three double CDs that chronologically reflect the musical development of the Beatles.

The responsible producer of the album was George Martin, his assistant was Allan Rouse. The sound engineer was Geoff Emerick, while Mark Lewisohn helped find and select the songs for the album .

Emergence

The Beatles in August 1965 during a press conference
During the filming of Magical Mystery Tour , 1967

The second double CD in the Anthology series contains recordings between February 16, 1965 and February 6, 1968. The album includes the following unreleased songs, which were recorded at Abbey Road Studios :

  1. If you've got trouble
  2. That means a lot
  3. 12-bar original

The album's recordings include live recordings, demos, and unused studio recordings of published songs (outtakes), as well as remixes of songs from 1995. Outtakes were made from the original recordings for the Help! , Rubber Soul , Revolver , Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Magical Mystery Tour .

When working on the anthology albums, the remaining three Beatles wanted to include the late John Lennon. When Yoko Ono gave them four earlier demo recordings of Lennon titled Grow Old with Me , Now and Then , Real Love and Free as a Bird , they revised the songs Free as a Bird in February 1994 and Real Love in February / March 1995 in Collaboration with Jeff Lynne digital and added newly recorded vocal and instrumental tracks. The four pieces date from 1977 to 1980, during which Lennon composed a lot on the piano in his apartment in the Dakota Building in New York and recorded his ideas on a cassette recorder. For the album Anthology 2 the song Real Love was used.

The album Anthology 2 entered the UK charts at number one a week after its release. It was the Beatles' 14th number one album in the UK. In the USA, Anthology 2 also reached first place in the US charts, making it the 17th number one album there. In May 1998, the album was multi-platinum in the US for four million copies sold. In Germany the album reached number four in the charts. The single Real Love / Baby's in Black (Live) was released from the album on December 12, 1995 , although the song Baby's in Black (Live) is not included on any of the three double CDs, it was only re-released in September 2016 released in a new mix by The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl . The maxi single / EP Real Love also contains the songs Yellow Submarine (different version with a spoken introduction by Ringo Starr) and Here, There and Everywhere (remixing of recording takes 7 and 13). These two titles were also not used for the album.

Unused recording versions of the songs from the album Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band were released on May 26, 2017 for the 50th anniversary on a double CD and a four-CD box.

Re-releases

  • The album has been available for download from iTunes since June 11, 2011 . According to iTunes, the album was remastered . From April 4, 2016, the album was also available from other providers and streaming services.
  • At the same time, the Anthology Box Set appeared on iTunes , containing the three double albums Anthology 1 , Anthology 2 and Anthology 3 for download.

Cover design

The design of the three corresponding album covers (placed side by side they create an overall picture) comes from Klaus Voormann , a friend of the Beatles from the Hamburg days in the early 1960s, and the photo-realist Alfons Kiefer. The cover design was supported by Richard Ward / The Team. The introduction to the 48-page illustrated CD booklet was written by Derek Taylor , the notes on the individual songs are by Mark Lewisohn .
