12-Bar Original is an instrumental song by the British band The Beatles from 1965 that was unreleased until 1996.

background

12-Bar Original is the first instrumental piece the Beatles recorded since they were signed to EMI . It is one of the very few songs that the band wrote together and loosely based on the song Green Onions by Booker T. & the MG's from 1962. The song was while working on the album Rubber Soul was added, and after the dissolution of Beatles (1970) there were rumors that the album Rubber Soul was originally supposed to contain an instrumental song giving the title, which is probably a 12-bar original . Musically, the song is an attempt by the Beatles to play a blues .

Another reason for the recording could have been that the Beatles were delayed with the recordings for Rubber Soul and wanted to fill the album with this improvised song.

occupation

admission

12-Bar Original was recorded on November 4th 1965 at Abbey Road Studios , London . It was produced by George Martin , who also plays a harmonium on the recording . He was assisted by Norman Smith . The band first rehearsed the song and then recorded two takes , of which they broke off the first. The second take was unusually long at 6 minutes and 42 seconds. Overdubs were not added to the recording.

Since the song was never mixed during the further work on the album Rubber Soul , it was not intended for a release. It was only three days before the album was released that the song was mixed in mono and pressed onto acetate records for the Beatles' private collections .

publication

It wasn't until 1996 that 12-Bar Original was released in a newly made stereo version on the album Anthology 2 . This version has been significantly shortened to 2 minutes 55 seconds. Before that, it was already on countless Beatles bootlegs - also in the unabridged version .
