Love Songs ( English love songs ) is the fourth compilation album of the British group The Beatles after their separation, which contains previously published recordings. The album was released on November 19, 1977 in Great Britain, on October 21, 1977 in the USA and Germany.

Emergence

The record contract between EMI and the Beatles expired on February 6, 1976, so that EMI was entitled to publish compilation albums without obtaining the consent of the Beatles. First, the double album Rock 'n' Roll Music , which in the broader sense includes rock songs by the Beatles, was released, and in the following year Love Songs , which includes love songs by the Beatles.

For the first time, two songs, previously only available on B-sides of singles, were available in stereo on a British album : This Boy and Yes It Is . The new stereo mixes are so-called duophonic stereo (fake stereo). In In My Life and Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) of the British edition, the vocals are more centered due to the mix. Furthermore, the two stereo channels of the songs on the British version of the album were swapped. Who made this mix is not documented.

In the US, Love Songs reached number 24 on the Billboard 200 , making it the second The Beatles album, along with The Early Beatles , that no longer reached the top ten. In July 2000, the album was multi-platinum in the US for three million units sold (1.5 million double albums sold). In Great Britain the album reached number 7 in the charts and in Germany the album could not place in the charts.

The album Love Songs was pressed in Canada in a limited edition on yellow vinyl.

In the GDR , the album was also pressed, the record covers were in the Federal Republic of Germany produced and exported to the German Democratic Republic. The album (catalog number: Odeon / VEB F 666.219 / 20) was only available in GDR Intershops , probably from 1977.

Republication

In 1982 the album was re-released in Spain with a completely changed cover.

The album Love Songs has not yet been legally released on CD .

Cover design

The design of the cover comes from Roy Kohara and Kenneth R. Anderson. The original inside photo of the folding cover from 1968 is by Richard Avedon , which was changed in 1977 by Alan Williams at the request of Kenneth R. Anderson. In the first edition, the substance of the cardboard cover was modeled on a leather binding. In the USA, a 28-page booklet was enclosed containing the lyrics of the songs.
