You've Got to Hide Your Love Away ( english You have to hide your love ) is a song by British band The Beatles in 1965. It appeared on the album Help! . Was written You've Got to Hide Your Love Away by John Lennon and the author stating Lennon / McCartney released.

Lennon processes a love affair in the song . Allegedly, the song is supposed to deal with Lennon's relationship with the gay Beatles manager Brian Epstein , who went on vacation to Spain in April 1963 . The relationship was denied by both, however, while Beatles biographer Hunter Davies reported in his 2006 book The Beatles, Football And Me that Lennon admitted to him that he had a brief relationship with Epstein.

You've Got to Hide Your Love Away is one of the first songs the Beatles recorded on acoustic instruments only, thanks to the influence of Bob Dylan .

You've Got to Hide Your Love Away was recorded by the Beatles on the afternoon of February 18, 1965 at London's Abbey Road Studios . The producer was George Martin , assisted by Norman Smith . A total of nine takes were recorded, only two of which were complete. At the end of the session, the flutist John Scott , who was booked for this , recorded an alto and a tenor recorder . It was the first time that an additional musician had been booked to record a Beatles song (in 1962 Andy White played instead of Ringo Starr on Love Me Do. ).

You've Got to Hide Your Love Away was released on August 6, 1965 on the album Help! and was also seen in the film of the same name . The song was not released as a single . An alternative take was released in 1996 as part of the Anthology series.

Cover versions

Since 1965 numerous cover versions of the song have been published, including a. by the Beach Boys , Joe Cocker , Keane , Travis , Oasis , Sean Lennon , Elvis Costello , Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder . A version of The Silkie , which the Beatles were involved in producing, which appeared almost at the same time as the Beatles version , reached number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965 .
