Anthology 1 is the first compilation album of a total of three double albums by the British group The Beatles , which contains mostly legally unreleased recordings. The album was released on November 20, 1995 in the UK and Germany and on November 21, 1995 in the USA.
Anthology 1 is the Beatles' third album to contain previously unreleased recording material after their separation.
prehistory
At the end of 1969, the Beatles' first long-playing bootleg record entitled Kum Back was sold illegally. The songs of the bootleg probably came from the acetate pressing of March 1969 of the then planned Get Back and later Let It Be album. In the 1970s, further recordings of the Let It Be sessions, BBC recordings and various recordings of Beatles concerts followed. Legally only the live album The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl was released in May 1977.
In 1981 the sound engineer John Barrett, employed by Abbey Road Studios , was commissioned to catalog the recordings of the Beatles, in the process he discovered not only different versions of published songs but also previously unknown songs. Between July and September 1983, some of these songs were presented to an audience during a multi-media show at Abbey Road Studios . A music cassette containing some of the recordings ended up in the hands of bootleggers who then illegally published the material.
Geoff Emerick , a former Beatles sound engineer, first put songs together in 1984 for an album of unreleased Beatles material. In order to meet the tonal requirements of the 1980s, almost all tracks were shortened by cuts or fadeouts and remixed. The release date of the album named Sessions was definitely February 1985. Only then were the Beatles Paul McCartney , George Harrison and Ringo Starr , who were still alive , and the representatives of John Lennon, who died in 1980, informed about the Sessions project . The three Beatles still alive immediately intervened against the publication and announced that they would discuss the format of the publication. A copy of a music cassette from the Sessions album also fell into the hands of bootleggers , whereupon the Sessions album was illegally distributed.
In 1988, the first bootleg series was released Ultra Rare Tacks Volume 1-6 by Swingin 'Pig Records presented, the other unknown studio versions of the Beatles in excellent sound quality. The release of the Bootlegs meant that a wider audience became aware that unreleased recordings of the Beatles existed.
The book by Mark Lewisohn : The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions: The Official Story of the Abbey Road Years from 1988 chronologically lists all of the Beatles' studio recordings in Abbey Road Studios between 1962 and 1970 and officially documented for the first time which songs were included were unpublished at the time.
The first unpublished recordings of appearances on BBC radio broadcasts then appeared on November 30, 1994 on the album Live at the BBC .
After all right-wing parties had reached an agreement, George Martin began on May 22, 1995, with the occasional support of Paul McCartney , George Harrison and Ringo Starr, to listen to around 600 recordings of the Beatles, select them for the albums of the Anthology series, then edit them and mix them again. The decision was then made to publish three double CDs, which chronologically reflect the musical development of the Beatles.
The responsible producer of the album was George Martin, his assistant was Allan Rouse. The sound engineer was Geoff Emerick, while Mark Lewisohn helped find and select the songs for the album .
Emergence
The first double CD contains recordings between July 12, 1958 and October 18, 1964. Anthology 1 contains the first recordings of the Quarrymen , with the cast of John Lennon , Paul McCartney , George Harrison and John Lowe ( piano ) and Colin Hanton ( Drums ). This is followed by three songs from the beginning of 1960, they are part of the only known recordings in which Stuart Sutcliffe is musically involved. The three songs My Bonnie , Ain't She Sweet and Cry for a Shadow were recorded under the production direction of Bert Kaempfert in Hamburg in June 1961 and were first featured on a single in Germany in October 1961 (My Bonnie) and since 1964 on the album The Beatles' First distributed. On January 1, 1962, the Beatles had an audition date at Decca Records , where they recorded 15 songs. Five tracks from the Decca Sessions were used for the album Anthology 1 . From the test recordings for the audition date at Parlophone on June 6, 1962, in which the Beatles first came in contact with George Martin and last played with Pete Best , the two songs Besame Mucho and Love Me Do were used. The album also includes the following unreleased songs that were recorded at Abbey Road Studios :
- How Do You Do It
- One after 909
- You know what to do
- Leave My Kitten Alone
In addition, the album includes Lend Me Your Comb , a song not included on the Live at the BBC album, and Shout! , a live recording for the TV show Around The Beatles .
The rest of the recordings include live recordings, demos, and unused studio recordings of published songs (outtakes), short interview excerpts, and short excerpts from Brian Epstein's reading from his book A Cellarfull Of Noise .
Outtakes from the original recordings for the albums A Hard Day's Night and Beatles for Sale were used, but none from the album With the Beatles and from the February 11, 1963 recording sessions for the album Please Please Me .
When working on the anthology albums, the three remaining Beatles wanted to include the late John Lennon . When Yoko Ono gave them four earlier demo recordings of Lennon called Grow Old with Me , Now and Then , Real Love and Free as a Bird , they reworked the songs Free as a Bird in February 1994 and Real Love in February / March 1995 in Collaboration with Jeff Lynne digital and added newly recorded vocal and instrumental tracks. The four pieces date from 1977 to 1980, in which Lennon composed on the piano in his apartment in the Dakota Building in New York and recorded his ideas on a cassette recorder. For the album Anthology 1 the song Free as a Bird was used.
The album Anthology 1 entered the UK charts at number two a week after its release. In Germany it was the tenth album of the Beatles, which reached number one in the charts. In the US, Anthology 1 also reached number one on the US charts, where it stayed for three weeks, making it the Beatles' 16th number one album. In the first week, 855,473 copies were sold in the United States. In December 1996, the album went multi-platinum in the US for eight million copies. The single Free as a Bird / Christmas Time (Is Here Again) was released from the album on December 12, 1995 , although the song Christmas Time (Is Here Again) is not included on any of the three double CDs. On the maxi single / EP Free as a Bird there are the songs I Saw Her Standing There (recording take 9) and This Boy (recording takes 12 and 13), neither of which were used for the album.
Due to the great commercial success of the album, Pete Best and the heirs of Stuart Sutcliffe benefited proportionately from the proceeds.
Unused recording versions of the songs There's a Place , Do You Want to Know a Secret , A Taste of Honey , I Saw Her Standing There , Misery , From Me to You , Thank You Girl and the two demos Bad to Me and I'm in Love are on the album The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 .

Cover design
The design of the three corresponding album covers (placed side by side they create an overall picture) comes from Klaus Voormann , a friend of the Beatles from the Hamburg days in the early 1960s, and the photo-realist Alfons Kiefer. The cover design was supported by Richard Ward / The Team. The introduction to the 48-page illustrated CD booklet was written by Derek Taylor , the notes on the individual songs are by Mark Lewisohn .

Saint Peter's Church, Liverpool - July 6th 1957
On July 6, 1957, John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the first time during an event at which the Quarrymen also played. - Puttin 'on the Style (Norman Cazden)
- Baby Let's Play House (Arthur Gunter)
Test recordings from spring 1960

The Decca Audition was recorded live in mono , the producer was Mike Smith. Twelve of the fifteen titles (excluding the Lennon / McCartney compositions) appeared from September 1982 on various labels in a legal gray area; further publications were banned by a court order in 1988.
Ten songs from the Decca session have not yet been officially or legally released:
