How Do You Do It ( English analogously: How do you do that ) is a song by British band Gerry and the Pacemakers , which was published in 1963 as a single.

The Beatles recorded the song before Gerry and the Pacemakers , but didn't release it until 1995 on their compilation album, Anthology 1 . It was composed by Mitch Murray .

background

Mitch Murray composed the song How Do You Do It and recorded his own version of the song and then had an acetate pressing done, which he gave to Ron Richards, an assistant to George Martin . Richards liked the song and played it to Dick James, a music publisher, who immediately picked it up at his music publisher. When George Martin was looking for the right song for the Beatles' debut single, Ron Richards played him How Do You Do It . Martin believed the song was optimal for the Beatles and sent an acetate copy to Liverpool to the Beatles so they could learn their recording parts . The Beatles themselves were not convinced of How Do You Do It , preferring to record their own compositions, and gave their opinion about George Martin during the recording sessions, but he insisted on recording the song. The Beatles recorded the song with their new arrangement, which George Martin agreed to. That same week, Mitch Murray listened to the Beatles' version, and on September 12, 1962, he was told that the Beatles would not release How Do You Do It . The Beatles were able to convince George Martin that he chose Love Me Do as the A-side , so that their debut single Love Me Do / PS became I Love You .

Gerry and the Pacemakers came from Liverpool like the Beatles and had the same manager as Brian Epstein . This connection enabled Gerry and the Pacemakers to re-record How Do You Do It with the Beatles' arrangement and released it instead of the Beatles as their debut single and reached number one in the British charts before the Beatles. From Me to You , the Beatles' third single, pushed How Do You Do It off the charts.
