Volahn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eduardo "Volahn" Ramirez is an American musician of Guatemalan descent. His black metal solo project Volahn has existed since 2003 .

background

Ramirez is the driving force behind the Black Twilight Circle (Crepusculo Negro), founded in 2008, a Los Angeles- based black metal scene whose members have predominantly Latin American roots. In addition to Volahn, this includes other bands, including Arizmenda , Odz Manouk, Tukaaria and Ashdautas . The Black Twilight Circle also serves as a label for the bands. The music of the bands of the Black Twilight Circle is considered diverse, but what all bands have in common is a traditional, rumbling sound. However, a Rock Hard reviewer criticized that none of the bands really stood out.

In 2011 Ramirez gave the Boston Phoenix an interview in which he highlighted the Central American roots of the Black Twilight Circle and called Americans of European descent as occupiers, whereupon the singer "Naeth", who has German-Russian ancestors, ended Ashdautas.

For his solo project of the same name, Volahn is supported by live musicians. In 2018 Volahn was on a European tour with several other bands.

style

Volahn and other bands of the Black Twilight Circle take their influences from the folk music of the indigenous cultures of Latin America, desert rock or California surf rock (see also twang guitar ). In addition to the well-known Norwegian black metal scene, Ramirez also cites the Légions Noires (LLN) , BlazeBirth Hall (BBH) and other regional scenes as influences.

The texts of his solo project are predominantly in Spanish, occasionally also in Nahuatl , and deal with the indigenous mythology of his ancestors. The EP El Tigre del Sur (The Tiger of the South), released in 2019, is dedicated to Emiliano Zapata .
