Ashdautas were a black metal band from Long Beach (USA) that existed from 2002 to 2011.

history

Ashdautas belonged to the Black Twilight Circle, an informal association of Californian black metal bands, which deal with the content of the indigenous peoples of Central America and whose members mostly have Mexican or Guatemalan roots. Ashdautas were among the founders of this association. The band name is borrowed from the work of the writer JRR Tolkien and means "one day" in the language of the orcs designed by him . The band gave concerts across the country and also played at festivals such as the Chaos in Tejas in Austin or the Hordes of Darkness in New York. In addition to various publications on small labels around her, an album was released in 2008 on the most famous US black metal label, Full Moon Productions.

In 2011, guitarist Ramirez gave an interview to the weekly magazine Boston Phoenix in which he highlighted the Mesoamerican roots of the Black Twilight Circle and generally dismissed whites as the occupiers. Singer "Naeth", who has Russian and German roots, accused him of having knowingly misrepresented the band and their environment, and disbanded Ashdautas. A split album with Bone Awl was released posthumously. Ramirez then concentrated on his solo project Volahn, which has existed since 2003. After the separation, Cabello played with Dolorvotre and Shataan and has been running the solo project Arizmenda since 2007. Boutelle plays for Odz Manouk.

style

In an interview with Vice magazine, Ramirez describes the music of Ashdautas as "esoteric" and "universal" and gives as influences u. a. the black metal scenes of Norway, Greece and Brazil. The magazine itself attests the music of the Black Twilight Circle bands a "punk attitude". In an interview with the Boston Phoenix, bassist Prado cites the forces of nature, especially the ocean, as inspiration. The magazine described the music of the Black Twilight Circle bands as "the most exciting development in contemporary American Black Metal". Jason Campbell describes the band's music for the online magazine Voices from the Darkside as a style unique in Black Metal that "captures the majestic chaos in the music (of the band)". He assessed that the album Where the Sun is Silent stood out, especially in the context of the US black metal scene, clearly above all other releases in recent years. Sputnik Music described the music of Ashdautas as "ghostly, dissonant melodies, (...) deafening screeching and an atmosphere without any breathing space". Although it is exhausting to listen to the Ashdautas pieces on the split LP with Bone Awl, their beauty is revealed through the compactness of the composition. The weblog OccultBlackMetalZine describes the music of Ashdautas as "a very dark form of raw and primitive Black Metal with atmospheric and melodic elements and a depressive mood" and stuck the label " Post-Black-Metal " on it.
