A Collection of Beatles Oldies ( English A collection of old Beatles songs ) is the first compilation album and a total of eighth album by the British group The Beatles , which was released on December 10, 1966 in Great Britain. In Germany the album was only released on February 24, 1971, here it was their 18th album, including the compilation albums . The album was not released in the USA .
Emergence
Due to the upcoming Christmas festivities, it made sense to bring out an album. However, the Beatles pursued other activities and showed no interest in interrupting them. John Lennon was in Spain filming How I Won the War, directed by Richard Lester , George Harrison was in India , Paul McCartney in Kenya and was also busy composing the soundtrack for The Family Way . Ringo Starr was in the Bahamas and Spain.
Brian Epstein informed Parlophone at the end of October that, for the first time since 1963, the Beatles would not produce a new album or a single for the Christmas season. So it was decided to put together an album with older tracks that would include the eleven number one hits in the UK to date. For buyers in Europe, A Collection of Oldies ... but Goldies brought at least one track that was previously only released in the USA : a cover version of the rock 'n' roll piece Bad Boy by Larry Williams , the song originally appeared on the US American album Beatles VI . With the release of this album, all Beatles songs were released on both sides of the Atlantic. All subsequent studio album releases contained identical titles worldwide.
For the compilation album, George Martin remixed five songs, Paperback Writer on October 31, I Want to Hold Your Hand on November 7, She Loves You on November 8, and Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out on November 10, 1966 . Furthermore, the album contains slightly different versions of two songs: the stereo version of from Me to You the missing harmonica -Introduction of the mono version ; I Feel Fine begins with a two second long whisper that was not heard on the single version. The album contains a total of eight songs that were not previously available on LP in the UK: She Loves You , From Me to You , We Can Work It Out , I Feel Fine , Bad Boy , Day Tripper , Paperback Writer and I Want to Hold your hand .
The subtitle "... but Goldies" on the back of the album cover is an indication that six of the tracks on the LP had been awarded a gold record in Great Britain . Twelve of the pieces had sold more than a million times in the US, nine of which reached number one on the US charts. Not included on the album was the UK top ten hit Please Please Me , which reached number 2 in the UK.
The album was released in December 1966 in the following European countries, among others: Denmark , France , the Netherlands , Italy and Sweden . In the Federal Republic of Germany, the compilation album The Beatles' Greatest , which contains seven songs from A Collection of Beatles Oldies , was released on June 18, 1965 , so Odeon decided against a timely publication. The album was only released in the Federal Republic of Germany on February 24, 1971.
On the other hand, it is one of only four albums that came onto the market via the Amiga record label in the GDR . A Collection of Beatles Oldies was released in January 1974 in the GDR. After The Beatles from 1965, it was the second Beatles album to be released in the GDR.
In the USA, Capitol Records decided not to release the album , although no greatest hits album had been released to date .
The album A Collection of Beatles Oldies entered the UK charts at number 7 on December 14, 1966 and reached the highest chart position at number 6 the following week. It was the Beatles' first album in Great Britain to not hit number one on the charts reached.
The album was released in the UK in a mono and a stereo version. In the Federal Republic of Germany the album was only distributed in stereo mix.
