Things We Said Today ( English things we said today ) is a song by British band The Beatles in 1964. It appeared on the album A Hard Day's Night and on the B-side of the single of the same name . The song was composed by Paul McCartney ; however, it is under the band's usual copyright Lennon / McCartney .

McCartney wrote Things We Said Today in May 1964 on a yacht on which he was vacationing in the Virgin Islands with his girlfriend Jane Asher and Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and his girlfriend Maureen . He composed the song for the most part below deck in a cabin on an acoustic guitar . In the song, he describes in retrospect from a future perspective his certainty that his and Jane Asher's lifestyle will drive them apart.

Things We Said Today was recorded on June 2, 1964 at Abbey Road Studios , London . The producer was George Martin , assisted by Norman Smith . The Beatles recorded the song in just three takes and then added more vocals, piano and a tambourine via overdub . The piano played by John Lennon was later mixed out, but can still be heard softly in the background.

Another two recordings of Things We Said Today were made for the BBC . On July 14, 1964, the Beatles recorded the song for the Top Gear radio show . A second recording was made three days later for the program From Us to You .

Things We Said Today appeared on July 10, 1964 on both the album A Hard Day's Night and on the same day on the B-side of the single of the same name . The single was a worldwide number one hit. The song was published from 1964 by Northern Songs . The EP Extracts from the Album A Hard Day's Night also features the song. The BBC recording of July 14, 1964 was released 30 years later on the album Live at the BBC . A live version appeared on May 4, 1977 on the album The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl .
