Jane Asher (born April 5, 1946 in Marylebone , London ) is a British actress and author .

Life

Jane Asher is the second of three children of doctor Richard Asher and music professor Margaret Asher. Her older brother Peter is one half of the pop duo Peter & Gordon , her younger sister Clare also works as an actress.

In 1952, Asher made her film debut in the drama Mandy . In the following ten years she was to be seen in numerous television and cinema productions, including the science fiction film Shock (1955), the TV series The Adventures of Robin Hood (1956-1958) and the literary film adaptation of The Prince and the Beggar Boy (1962). In 1960 she took on the female lead in a West End theater production of Peter Pan . At the age of 15 she was one of the UK's best known child stars.

On April 18, 1963, Asher attended a performance by the Beatles at the Royal Albert Hall on behalf of the BBC music magazine Radio Times to write a concert review and interview the band. From this meeting a longstanding relationship developed with the Beatles bassist Paul McCartney , with whom she became engaged in 1967. Jane Asher was McCartney's source of inspiration for several songs, including We Can Work It Out , Here, There And Everywhere, and For No One . Although, according to Cynthia Lennon, Paul was “proud as a peacock” of his beautiful, famous, and well-heeled fiancée, he kept having affairs. Marianne Faithfull even claimed the two never got on really well together. In 1968 they separated, and a year later McCartney married the photographer Linda Eastman .

In 1964, Asher was seen together with Vincent Price in Roger Corman's Satanas - The Castle of the Bloody Beast (based on Edgar Allan Poe's story The Mask of the Red Death ), in 1966 alongside Michael Caine in the comedy The seducer lets greet you (Alfie) . The drama Deep End , in which she played a leading role in 1970, is considered one of her best and most famous works as an actress and earned her a nomination for the British Film Awards .

In 1971 she met the draftsman Gerald Scarfe , with whom she has been married since 1981 and has three children.

Since 2001, Jane Asher has also made a name for herself as an author of recipe books and novels. She owns a ready-made cake company and also presents her baking recipes on British television. Asher, however, appears to continue in films and television series, for example in a supporting role in Death at a Funeral ( Death at a Funeral , 2007) by Frank Oz .
