Cynthia Lennon
Cynthia Powell Lennon (born September 10, 1939 in Blackpool , England , † April 1, 2015 in Mallorca , Spain ) was the first wife of the musician John Lennon .
Life
Cynthia Powell grew up in Hoylake, a small town near Liverpool . At the age of 18, she attended Liverpool College of Art , where she met John Lennon. In 1962 she became pregnant, and she and Lennon decided to get married. The wedding took place on August 23, 1962 at the Mount Pleasant Register Office in Liverpool. The marriage was long kept a secret because Beatles manager Brian Epstein feared that if it became known, many female Beatles fans would lose interest in Lennon. Cynthia and John Lennon's son, John Charles Julian , was born on April 8, 1963 at Sefton General Hospital in Liverpool. The press found out the secret of their marriage in 1964, but Epstein's fears did not materialize; there was no negative impact on the group's popularity.
In 1968, Cynthia Lennon sued her husband for adultery with Japanese artist Yoko Ono . Initially, John Lennon planned to sue his wife for adultery as well and deny his own guilt for the breakdown of the marriage. John Lennon's claim that he had not committed adultery soon turned out to be a hoax as Yoko Ono was expecting a child from him. On November 8, 1968, the divorce became final and Cynthia Lennon was given custody of Julian.
On August 1, 1970, Cynthia Lennon married the Italian hotelier Roberto Bassanini. The marriage lasted until 1973. In 1978 she married John Twist, an engineer from Lancashire , England . Her first autobiography , A Twist of Lennon , was published that same year . After divorcing Twist in 1983, she reverted to the surname Lennon.
Another autobiography, John , appeared in September 2005 , in which Cynthia Lennon re-examined her relationship with John Lennon.
Cynthia Lennon lived in Mallorca until her death . She married her fourth husband, Noel Charles, whom she had met through her son Julian, on June 7, 2002. She died on April 1, 2015 at the age of 75 of complications from cancer.
