The Río Guadalete is a river in the Spanish province of Cádiz in southwestern Andalusia . It rises in the Sierra de Grazalema and flows into the Bay of Cadiz after 157 km at El Puerto de Santa María .
The river once represented the border between Moorish and Christian Spain.
history
The name Guadalete supposedly derives from Lethe , the river of oblivion in Greek mythology. The background of the name is said to have been a battle between Phoenicians , who were settled in today's Cádiz , and Greeks who settled on the river.
