Benno Berneis (born May 9, 1883 in Fürth ; † August 8, 1916 via Saint-Souplet ) was a German painter of the emerging Expressionism .

Life

Benno Berneis was born in 1883 as the only son of the Jewish factory owner Albert Berneis and his wife Betty, b. Neubauer, born in Fürth. His father was the director of the B. Berneis shoe factory founded by him and his brother in 1875 , which later renamed the United Fränkische Schuhfabriken AG .

After his school days, Benno Berneis was a student in the Munich painting school of Moritz Heymann from 1902 , who trained him as an impressionist painter.

From 1906 he lived in Berlin, where the artist, with the help of Max Slevogt , was allowed to take part in the winter exhibition of the Berlin Secession in December . Benno Berneis was now regularly represented with several works in the summer exhibitions of the coming years.

In 1909, together with Henri Matisse , he exhibited his work for the first time in Paul Cassirer's art salon . Another comprehensive exhibition followed in March 1914, this time with his friend, sculptor August Gaul . In the same year Benno Berneis was also involved in founding the Free Secession around Max Liebermann . He was elected to the board of the artist group by lottery.

During the First World War he initially served in a Bavarian train department , where he was a good rider and was responsible for coordinating the supply of provisions to the front. With the promotion to lieutenant , he volunteered for the air force in mid-1915 . After his training as a pilot he was used on the western front, especially in the reconnaissance of enemy artillery positions.

Benno Berneis died on August 8, 1916 as a member of a combat single -seater command led by Kurt Student in an aerial battle over the French community of Saint-Souplet . His grave is in the nearby German military cemetery Mont-Saint-Remy in the Ardennes .

Benno Berneis was married to the actress Gertrud Eysoldt , with whom he had the son Peter Berneis , who later worked successfully as an actor and screenwriter in the film industry .
