Peter Berneis

Peter Berneis , also Peter Eysoldt (born April 1, 1910 in Berlin , Germany , † November 4, 1985 in Munich ) was a German actor and screenwriter .

Life

The son of the painter Benno Berneis came to film through his mother, the actress Gertrud Eysoldt , in 1923 and appeared at her side as a child actor in front of the camera under the name Peter Eysoldt. Because of his “half-Jewish” origins, the qualified physicist and engineer emigrated to London as a result of the National Socialist takeover . In May 1937 Berneis traveled on to the USA . There he applied for US citizenship in the same year. Berneis first found a job as an art professor at the University of Washington, DC In 1940 he was naturalized.

A little later Wilhelm Dieterle brought him to Hollywood , where he wrote scripts for some top productions, including the filigree human study The Glass Menagerie and the social drama Fernruf from Chicago . In 1953 Berneis returned to Germany (Federal Republic), but continued to write the manuscripts for German and American films. These were mostly romantic subjects and comedies, occasionally also dramas. In 1963 and 1964 the returnees were given two opportunities to direct a film in Germany.

Berneis had also worked as a revision of scripts by other authors.
