Der Alte is a German-language television crime series produced by ZDF , SRF and ORF . The 94-minute pilot film entitled Die Dienstreise was broadcast on Easter Monday 1977 .

In the first 100 episodes, Erwin Köster ( Siegfried Lowitz ) headed Murder Commission II in the Munich police headquarters. He was supported by his assistants Gerd Heymann ( Michael Ande ) and Martin Brenner ( Jan Hendriks ). His superior was Franz Millinger ( Henning Schlueter ). In his last episode ( Two Lives , first broadcast: January 12, 1986), Köster suffered a shot in the stomach, as a result of which he died in hospital.

On February 28, 1986, his successor Chief Inspector Leo Kress ( Rolf Schimpf ) took up his post and also brought reinforcements with him: Henry Johnson ( Charles M. Huber ), who was replaced in 1997 by Axel Richter ( Pierre Sanoussi-Bliss ). Werner Riedmann ( Markus Böttcher ) was responsible for securing evidence .

After more than 21 years, Schimpf retired in his 222nd episode as Chief Inspector Kress . His successor from March 2008 was Walter Kreye for 43 episodes in the role of Chief Inspector Rolf Herzog . In September 2012 Jan-Gregor Kremp took over this role as Chief Detective Richard Voss . The characters Axel Richter and Werner Riedmann were replaced in 2015 by the criminalist Annabell "Anna" Lorenz ( Stephanie Stumph ) and the commissioner candidate Tom Kupfer ( Ludwig Blochberger ).

Initially only a detective assistant, later chief detective and finally chief detective, Heymann retired after 39 years and over 400 cases in 2016. Measured by the number of episodes and the time, Ande played an investigator on German television for the longest time.

In 2017 Thimo Meitner joined the team as the new fourth man in the role of Lennard "Lenny" Wandmann . However, Lenny is not a commissioner, but a trained computer scientist and works as a researcher and IT specialist and thus takes on Werner Riedmann's tasks rather than Gerd Heymann's. Lenny has Asperger's Syndrome and works exclusively in the background. Witness interviews and the job outside do Anna and Tom.
