occupation

Bewitching Arabella is a German social comedy by Axel von Ambesser from 1959. It was based on motifs from the novel Die Bewaubergende Arabella by Georgette Heyer from 1949.

action

Germany around 1900: After the death of her father, Arabella, the eldest daughter of the family, has to support the indebted family. She goes to London to see her somewhat eccentric aunt Lady Bridlington, who just barely makes a living portraying the pets of nobles. Her good friend Lord Fleetwood is supposed to introduce Arabella into society and thus enable her to marry a rich man quickly.

The first path leads both to the charming, rich and intelligent Robert Beaumaris, who, however, has already been initiated into Arabella's plans by the clumsy Lord Fleetwood and is therefore no longer a candidate for marriage. Since Fleetwood is clearly finding his role as dome father difficult, Arabella asks Robert to introduce her to potential husbands in the future, and he agrees. He also bets Fleetwood on a horse that he will marry Arabella within five weeks - he believes that she is really only after the money, but does not know that she will only take on everything for her family.

The marriage candidates turn out to be unsatisfactory. Although Arabella learns everything about beers (for a wealthy brewer), paintings (for a painting collector) and big game hunting (for a big game hunter) before every meeting, a pairing fails for various reasons. When Robert learns why Arabella is doing this, he suddenly sees her in a different light and falls in love with her.

The redeeming news comes from Germany: Arabella's younger sister will marry a rich man who will take over the mortgage on the family house and thus save the family from all financial difficulties. Arabella now no longer needs a rich husband and decides to take revenge for all the wrongly selected potential husbands and his always quiet mockery of Robert: She flirts with the athlete Gordon Blair, who is also rich, but also with looks, youth and Intellect can score. Although it no longer matters, they spend a lot of time together - while Arabella just wants to test whether Robert is jealous, Gordon actually falls in love with Arabella and proposes marriage to her on the edge of a hunt. Only now does Robert abandon his apparent reserve and reveal his love to Arabella. He and Arabella eventually become a couple.

production

Enchanting Arabella was filmed in Coburg from September to October 1959 . The premiere took place on December 22, 1959 in the Cologne Capitol .

criticism

The encyclopedia of international films described Bechanting Arabella as an “attempt at a social comedy with modest punchlines in words and images, with parrot, mastiff, bath tub and an antediluvian automobile also making ample use of 'prop humor'”.
