Gregory of Rezzori

Gregor Arnulph Herbert Hilarius von Rezzori d'Arezzo (born May 13, 1914 in Czernowitz in Bukowina , Austria-Hungary ; † April 23, 1998 in Donnini, Reggello ) was a German-speaking writer and film actor .

Life

Rezzori came from a Sicilian family who came to Vienna via northern Italy in the middle of the 18th century . Rezzori's grandfather worked as an architect in the service of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy . The pedigree remained partially unconfirmed during an examination in the 1950s by the German Aristocratic Archives.

His father was a civil servant in Chernivtsi, which (after Austria-Hungary had lost the First World War) fell to Romania in the Treaty of St. Germain . The members of the family received Romanian citizenship in 1919 . After Stalin forced Romania on June 26, 1940 to cede northern Bukovina with Chernivtsi to the Soviet Union (see History of Romania # Second World War ), Gregor von Rezzori became stateless . In 1984 he acquired Austrian citizenship.

Rezzori attended high schools in Kronstadt ( Transylvania ), Fürstenfeld ( Styria ) and Vienna. In Leoben , where he became a member of the Corps Schacht Leoben , he studied mining , in Vienna architecture and medicine and painting at the Vienna Art Academy. He interrupted these studies to do his military service in Romania. Then Rezzori stayed for four years drawing and painting in Bucharest and completed an art degree in Vienna. In 1938 he came to Berlin and began to write. As a Romanian citizen, Rezzori was spared participation in World War II.

Rezzori introduced himself to the literary scene with entertainment novels. After the war he mainly worked as a journalist and radio writer. Until 1948 he was employed by the NWDR , for which he a. a. reported on the Nuremberg trials . Later he worked as a freelancer and told the first of his Maghrebian stories for the night program . These funny, sometimes maddened anecdotes and legends from the Balkan fantasy land of Maghrebia established Rezzori's world success as a writer. They appeared in book form in 1952. At the same time, Rezzori remained active as a screenwriter and worked as a passionate casual actor in around a dozen films (e.g. Viva Maria! 1965). Rezzori had been a member of the PEN Center of the Federal Republic of Germany since 1958 .

From his first marriage to Priska von Tiedemann there were three sons. A second marriage with the painter Hanna Axmann was divorced after a short time. In 1967 he married Beatrice Monti della Corte, who turned the Galleria dell'Ariete in Milan into a well-known modern art gallery. Rezzori also dealt intensively with art. His private collection, which was distributed to the residences in Tuscany, Rhodes and Milan, bear witness to this. The features section praised Rezzori as a chronicler of a lost epoch who had brought writing to mastery with a light hand.

From the beginning of the 1980s he designed articles for the ORF magazine Jolly Joker , where he mainly reported on aristocrats, famous people and the rich. He worked as a writer for Playboy , Elle and in the last years of his life regularly for the Austrian daily newspaper Kurier . Through his journalistic work and the Maghrebian stories he had an image as a “ slacker , salon lion, bon vivant”, although in interviews he was dissatisfied with the blanket statements of critics about himself.

Rezzori is buried under a small stone pyramid in the garden of his Santa Maddalena estate in Donnini near Florence.
