For Goethe tells his life , Gerlach had prepared Goethe's autobiographical descriptions, writings and numerous other documents and put them together into a continuous dramatic report.
Gerlach published a small number of other books on cultural-historical topics. In the 1950s he also wrote regularly for the cultural columns of the time .
On September 2, 1947, he married Odilia Freiin von Morsey called Picard (* 1922) in Hamburg, with whom he lived in Hamburg. The marriage was divorced on May 5, 1960 in Berlin.
