Hans Quest

Hans Quest (born August 20, 1915 in Herford , † March 29, 1997 in Munich ) was a German actor and director . He worked in film , television , radio drama and on the theater .

life and work

Hans Quest came from a family of musicians and grew up in the historic Kantorhaus right next to the Herford Cathedral . He left the Humanist Friedrichs Gymnasium prematurely. He completed his acting training in Berlin from 1933 to 1935 at the drama school of the Berlin State Theater. He received his first engagement from 1935 to 1937 at the Wuppertaler Bühnen . From 1937 to 1939 he worked at the Prussian State Theater in Berlin until he was drafted into military service.

After the war he worked at the Hildesheim City Theater in 1946, where he made his directorial debut, as well as at the Hanover State Theater and the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. From 1947 to 1950 he worked at the Hamburger Kammerspiele . Here he became known as Beckmann, returning from the war in Wolfgang Borchert's Outside Front Door - Borchert dedicated the play to him.

From 1950 to 1955 as well as 1971/72 and 1982/83 he was engaged at the Münchner Kammerspiele . Since 1972 he has been a member of the ensemble of the Bavarian State Theater .

In addition to his work at the theater, Quest also worked as an actor in film and television productions from 1938, especially for the Federal Republic of Germany but also in some DEFA films, such as The Blue Swords in 1949 , where he played the porcelain inventor Johann Friedrich Böttger . Later he also worked as a film director, mainly in the Federal Republic of Germany. He celebrated his greatest successes with the street sweepers It's Time , Das Halstuch , Tim Frazer and Tim Frazer: The Salinger case , which were all based on models by the British author Francis Durbridge . Then he turned back to the stage as a director. He directed at the Junge Bühne Hamburg, at the Kleine Komödie Munich and on tours.

As a voice actor he lent Richard Attenborough (pirate love) , Tom Courtenay (A day in the life of Iwan Denisovich) and John Garfield (The bill without the landlord) his voice. He could also be heard as the gray man in the radio play setting of the children's book classic Momo by Michael Ende .

Hans Quest was married twice, his first marriage to the actress Charlotte Witthauer , with whom he had two sons, the actor Christoph Quest (1940-2020) and the company owner Thomas Quest (* 1945), through whom he is the grandfather of the actress Nora Quest (* 1990) and the actor Philipp Quest (* 1987). In his second marriage he married the actress Ingrid Capelle . In two episodes of the series Forsthaus Falkenau , the two appeared as the Grassmann couple.

He was buried in the north cemetery in Munich .

His written estate is in the archive of the Academy of Arts in Berlin.
