action

The London fashion photographer Eric Martin expects his brother Philip Martin to return from Germany after a longer period of military service. When he arrives, Philip Martin reports an accident in Hamburg. He should bring items from the victim's wife to Dublin. However, Philip Martin behaves strangely, so that Eric Martin doubts the story. In fact, his brother travels to the Royal Falkon Hotel in Maidenhead and rents a room there. The managing director Douglas Talbot hands him a volume of poetry that has been sent to him by mail, which he reads there repeatedly. After a few days, Philip Martin was found shot dead in his room. Everything points to suicide. But there are inconsistencies, as Inspector Hyde finds out. Days later, Andy Wilson, a good friend of Philips, contacts Eric Martin. He also seems to know more and is shot in the street after his visit and seriously injured. Eric Martin wants to find out more and visits the hotel. House servant Arthur hands him a key he found while cleaning Philip's room. This key arouses the interest of the owner Mrs. Curtis as well as that of her brother Thomas Quayle. It turns out that there was a bank robbery in Hamburg that had something to do with the key. The real mastermind can only be exposed at the end.

background

The film was first broadcast on ARD between January 18 and 22, 1965 in three 75-minute episodes, each at 9 p.m.

The director Paul May was known among other things for the 08/15 films and Via Mala . At Scotland Yard, Dr. He had also directed Mabuse in a crime film. After Die Schlüssel he took on Melissa (1966) one more time directing a Durbridge film. After Durbridge had previously been filmed in six parts based on the English model, May's films were the first three-part series.

Hans Quest , who has previously directed four Durbridge films, appeared in The Keys as Thomas Quayle.

Harald Leipnitz took over the lead role again 12 years later in the last multi-part German Durbridge film The Chain .

Albert Lieven played a role again in a Durbridge film after Der Andere and Das Halstuch . Shortly before his death, he appeared in Wie ein Blitz in 1970 and thus became the most frequently used actor in the German Durbridge films.

After two appearances in Durbridge films, Friedrich Joloff was seen in all Reinecker three-part films on ZDF from 1967. The ZDF produced three trilogies with The Death Runs Behind , Babeck and 11.20 a.m. in order to create competition for the successful Durbridge films, among other things.
