action

The story takes place in France at the time of the German occupation in the spring of 1944. The situation in the capital Paris is tense and the Allies are expected to land on the French coast every day.

In the center of action there are several people who are doing their job on both the German and the Allied sides. While the young in Paris lieutenant commander Jochen Malden because of his amorous relationship with the Frenchwoman Madeleine already under surveillance by the Gestapo stands, his brother Werner is beyond the English Channel Serving the world of British opponents and speaks there in Soldatensender Calais in German propaganda texts for the Wehrmacht in France. The Gestapo now suspects that “their” Malden is also an “insecure cantonist ” and may, as an enemy agent, be feeding the (British) other side with information. His contacts with the French woman also make him appear to be the ideal contact with the Resistance , and so attempts are made to create a resistance group through him.

Gestapo chief Albrecht wants to instrumentalize Jochen Malden with the help of his secretary Anne, because the two young people were once emotionally connected. Anne reluctantly agrees to spy on Jochen. While Albrecht hopes to be able to expose the lieutenant captain as a British agent and traitor, Anne tries to prevent exactly this. But Anne's efforts are in vain, and Jochen Malden is ultimately to be arrested and imprisoned on Albrecht's orders after the Resistance had arranged an encounter between the two dissimilar brothers. Albrecht orders both Maldens to be killed, but Anne manages to warn the Maldens at the last moment. Anne is also in extreme danger of her life. Meanwhile, the head of the soldier broadcaster is planning, with the help of an old childhood friend, the fighter pilot Rudi Castrop, to “cut out” his broadcaster and best man in France and to withdraw the Gestapo access.

Reviews

Paimann's film lists summed up: "A subject-related opaque plot that, whether defusing situations and characters, is not documentary, but is perfectly prepared."

"Contemporary history filmed in the manner of a magazine: clichéd, non-binding, bursting with twisted mandatory and resistance terms."
